Great location but tad disappointed at the 2-bed dorm
Was looking forward to a great stay in Cat's Pajamas. Perhaps, that's why the saying goes, the higher the expectations, the greater the fall. Booked a 2-bed dorm. Thought it would be much better with fewer people in the room. However, when i went into the room, there was already 1 man in there and his things were all strewn over the place. Also, the 2-bed room is more for 2 people where 1 is a caregiver for the other person who is wheel-chair bound. Hence, the space at the bottom is huge. However, there were no space to put equipment to charge at the top deck, unlike the other 4 or 8 bed dorms, perhaps something to consider. That being said, the hostel staff were great and the location was very very good, only 2 mins walk to a metro station and directly opposite was a building with a supermarket on the basement. Good stay in general!
The Cat's Pajamas Hostel is located in a very vibrant area of Berlin between Kreuzberg and Neukoelln. Everything you might need is close by, from the underground station to the bus stop, shops, and markets. It's an amazing hostel that's newly decorated and furnished with a very nice taste for design and details. The LocationThe Cat's Pajamas Hostel is very easy to find -- it's only fifty meters away from the U-Bahn station Hermannplatz (U7 or U8). It's located on the righthand side of Urbanstrasse opposite the Sparkasse Bank.Rooms and BathroomsThe dorms are very clean; the mattresses and pillows are comfortable and clean too. The bunk beds have reading light and a plug for each bed. There are lockers in the room and also in the reception area if necessary. There also is a small table with chairs in the dorm, hangers for jackets or towels, and a big mirror to fully see yourself. Each dorm has is own bathroom with toilette and shower room separated. There is an hairdryer, the soap in the shower and by the sink is provided as per the towels with no extra fee. There also are extra common bathrooms per each floor outside the dorms. There are private rooms too for two people or an entire family and dogs are welcome when staying in a private room.Common SpacesBy the reception, there are two computers with free internet access free for everybody to use. There are also armchairs and trendy sofas in the entrance area with books that can be exchanged. There also are plenty of board games such like Monopoly, Jenga, UNO, and more for everybody to enjoy. At the reception there are free maps of Berlin and plenty of information about tours and activities to do. The hostel is wheelchair friendly; there is a lift and a ramp to get to the kitchen. There is an outdoor area where smokers can enjoy their cigarettes. The kitchen is very big with a lot of tables and places to sit. There are a lot of plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, and plenty of pans to cook your own food. There also are three big fridges, a hot water dispenser, a toaster, a microwave, an hob/oven, and a dishwasher. The breakfast is included and very sufficient to start the day. SummaryThe Cat's Pajamas Hostel is a very nice place to stay -- inexpensive, with friendly staff, and very safe (with lockers, twenty-four-hour reception, and keycard for the room). It also offers everything you might need, from free Wi-Fi to bicycles to rent.
Hotel meets hostel
Having stayed over about 10 years in around 100 hostels and about the same hotels -- this was in the top 5 of both. It was spotlessly clean. The staff and service was great. The showers rocked. I stayed for business and it is conveniently located next to a metro and in the new chic/trendy/cool area of Berlin. I can recommend trying local bars and restaurants if you wander the side streets heading towards the River Spree. The breakfast was substantial and tasty. And I know from other guests that the free breakfast and free linen was pretty unique for a hostel in Berlin. A thoroughly enjoyable 4 night stay. I will definitely return.
Very well thought out & run new hostel
The attention to detail apparent in this hostel can be obvious and I bet there's a load of details I didn't notice that made a difference. Well thought out beds in dorms -- each has shelf to put personal items, night light, power socket. Lockers for each bed by lower bunk. I found the mattresses very comfortable and supportive, but I suppose people's preferences can vary. I slept really well. And I moved around between dorms while I was there, chasing available bunks, and the dorms were to the same standard. Large common room/kitchen with proper cookers and an oven and plenty of utensils and pots, ample fridge space. Possibly the only hostel I've used that has equipped itself to support full capacity of guests. Large communal table to share and meet with others or more personal smaller tables. Reliable and fast internet; Breakfast includes wurst, pat, ham and cheese and bizarrely is no extra cost, and easily augmented by your own eggs cooked on stove if you fancy something hot to start the day. Unlimited tea all day and unlimited fresh coffee at breakfast. V helpful & likeable staff. Spotless and modern design. What's not to like about this hostel? A standard setter for Berlin and elsewhere. Don't come here expecting a 5-star hotel based on the positive comments. It's a hostel and priced accordingly. In that context it's hard to see how it could be improved upon. The only suggestions I can come up with is that the paper towel dispensers in the kitchen should be bigger -- it emptied quick with many guests around. More difficult to change is that the lockers for the upper bunks are next to the lower bunk so access would disturb someone sleeping there. Given how well everything has been implemented I assume this was imposed by space limitations or something. When I was there nobody used these lockers anyway and there are lockers downstairs for stuff you don't want to leave in the room or carry around with you and these are more secure. Oh and -- great detail this -- these lockers have power sockets so you can recharge batteries while your electronics are secure for the day. This would be a great place for small traveling groups or couples to rendezvous and catch up with each other, cook a big communal meal and make use of the big table.
Great hostel! Staff was super helpful and friendly. Great atmosphere. Really close to underground station. Nice beautiful clean rooms and toilets. Free breakfast and linens were great! Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends!
