Arty Paris Hostel & Budget Hotel

The Review

Arty Paris Hostel may look like a great find for its price, but it suffers from some serious issues. Such as its strange Wi-Fi check-in policy (you have to "check-in" to the hostel via Facebook every time you want to access the Wi-Fi, on either phone or laptop) and terribly small, dirty bathrooms. No hostel has it all, but this place has so much potential and could do much better.

The Location

The hostel is easy and convenient to get to from the metro, about equidistant to Porte de Vanves on Line 13 (light blue) and Convention on Line 12 (dark green). It is walking distance from Parc Georges-Brassens, the Convention food/clothes market, and only a short metro ride from the Seine and all the big tourist sites. The one annoyance in location is Arty's considerable distance from Gare du Nord. If arriving from Gare du Nord, it will take at least 45 minutes, 1-2 transfers, and a 10-15 minute walk to get to Arty, which is not easy with a lot of luggage.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Don't be fooled by the beauty, class, and cleanliness of reception! Rooms and bathrooms are nowhere near the quality presented at the front entrance. Rooms are small, doors and beds are creaky, bunks lack space, and there are very few outlets. Sheets and a large blanket are provided, but the maids open the windows during the day, which means in the winter, it is freezing by nighttime.

Bathrooms are tiny and, frankly, disgusting. There is no space to change or keep clothes dry, and the bathrooms don't appear to be cleaned often. On our stay, the shower was filled with pubic hair and the toilet seat was splattered with urine. Gross!

Common Spaces

The common spaces are Arty's saving graces. Reception is next to a little lounge area with a foosball table, couches, guitars, and an actually really nice bathroom. There is one desktop computer that is automatically connected to Wi-Fi right in front of reception. The kitchen is beautiful, though sometimes a mess, and the dining/breakfast area is a great spot for work and socializing. It has more outlets than any of the dormitories and is always filled with people who don't want to be in their rooms.

Arty is a bit like a rotten egg: looks great on the outside, not so great on the inside. The place is disappointing and doesn't seem to have any interest in improvements.

Outside of Arty, easy to see from afar thanks to the flags.
One of the dormitories, with bunks and large lockers.
The tiny ensuite bathroom.
Shower in the bathroom.
The common room adjacent to reception, with pool tables, coffee machine, and guitar.
The kitchen, looking very clean (which it isn't always.)
The dining area, another common space.

It's ok.
Services were good. Very clean. Quiet neighborhood. Breakfast was fine. Staff were really nice people. Restroom was smaller than I would ever expect. Everything on average was ok.

Everything's great except the small bathroom
Clean, welcome atmosphere and helpful staff. Several types of bread and drink to choose at breakfast. Two big refrigerators to store the food. And useful information made by the staff. The only thing is that the four-bed mix room has a pretty small bathroom. Couldn't sit properly on the toilet and had difficulty when showering.
Stay somewhere else
Of all three of the hostels me and my friends stayed in in Paris, this one was the worst. My friend and I tried to be optimistic and easy to please, but the hostel is a 10 minute walk from the nearest metro and there is very little in the surrounding area. Upon first arriving the common room looks very nice, still giving us hope for a good experience. However, the room was significantly smaller than any other hostel room we stayed in, the breakfast was bread or bread (no options unlike other places that typically at least offer cereal) the bathrooms were covered in mold, and the wifi, which is only offered in the common room, sucks. I'm not saying this was the worst place ever, but honestly ... Do your research and you can get a lot more bang for your buck.

Nice Hostel
Very nice hostel & you truly get a friendly feeling from everyone. Nice place to meet people! Wifi works fast! Clean linen, towels are 1 Euro. It's like a 15 minute walk from the metro, but in a safe area. There are many restaurants & grocery stores near by. There is full kitchen that can be used to cook you own meals. The staff is VERY nice & helpful! The only problem was that the bathroom was very small & there is mold everywhere in the bathroom & I saw a couple of ants on the sofa in the lobby. Other than that, my stay was great!
