Mad Monkey Hostel Siem Reap

The Review

Mad Monkey Hostel Siam Reap is an excellent hostel located just off a main road right in the heart of Siem Reap. The hostel also includes a rooftop bar and restaurant as well a spacious swimming pool.

The Location

The hostel is located on the main road that runs through Siem Reap, but its set-back location ensures that the noise from the busy road does not reach the hostel. The area where the hostel is located is fairly busy during the day but quiets down around 11 p.m. The famous Pub Street is only a five-minute walk from the hostel as are the night market, old market, and the riverfront. Because the hostel is a short walk out of town, all the rowdy crowds will not disturb you. The road that the hostel is on also leads to the famous Angkor Wat temple complex and it takes around twenty minutes to get there. Getting to the hostel is fairly easy, as Siem Reap is quite a small place.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel contains a variety of rooms, including mixed or female-only dorm rooms, singles, doubles, twins, and triples. The hostel is split out over four levels with rooms located on the first three floors. The building is in very good condition and is very well maintained inside and out. Throughout the interior of the hostel there are various paintings on the white walls that have been completed by guests during their stay. These make the inside of the hostel look very attractive and give the hostel a funky, modern feel. The rooms are cleaned before and after your stay and can be cleaned everyday if you wish.

We stayed in a deluxe double room with a private bathroom on the second floor during our stay. The room has a large double bed and an en suite bathroom but the room does not feel very spacious -- it is pretty cramped and the bed takes up most of the space. The room also has its own air conditioning unit, which is controlled within the room, allowing you to adjust the temperature to suit. Finally the room is locked using a standard key and could be locked from the inside too.

The double room has its own private bathroom with a toilet, power shower, and sink with a small mirror above. The bathroom is poorly lit, the mirror is too small, and the shower is average. Just like the bedroom, the bathroom also feels cramped and there is nowhere near enough light in there. However, on the upside, the bathroom is clean and tidy.

Common Spaces

This hostel has two main common areas -- the rooftop bar and the area around the swimming pool. The rooftop bar is very unique, as the whole floor in the bar is covered in sand, making it Cambodia's only rooftop beach bar. The bar itself is very well laid out, with plenty of seating available both inside and on the terrace outside. There are also a few hammocks, which are great for chilling in the morning after the night before. The bar also doubles as a restaurant and all day long it serves food, which is very good quality and very reasonably priced. Finally, the bar also contains a beer pong table and they play music. The only downside to this bar is that it is very noisy and if you happen to be in the rooms below, it can be a little bit hard to sleep. They do stop playing music around midnight, which is not too bad.

The second common area in the hostel is the area around the swimming pool and the terrace above it. The swimming pool is of a decent size and has an interesting set of pool rules. The area around the pool has a few tables and chairs as well large bean bags for sitting. It doesn’t have any sun loungers, which is rather disappointing. There is also a small bar downstairs to get your drinks poolside. On a terrace overlooking the pool are three large, four-post, king-size beds complete with covers above them to keep the sweltering Cambodian sun off you. These are great for relaxing after a hard day of temple viewing and also give a great view of the pool below. The atmosphere of this hostel is a very friendly and welcoming, but it also a very lively one too -- this is the hostel you go to if you want to party in Siem Reap.

Overall this is an excellent hostel that has been very well designed to keep backpackers happy. The atmosphere is very friendly, lively, and fun as well as being clean and safe. We recommend staying here if you come to Siem Reap.

An employee here tried to scam us
An employee here tried to scam us for US$1000. When we told the hostel management, they initially dismissed it an "accident" caused by "poor communication." It was neither. As far as I know, the employee still works at the hostel, and the hostel management hasn't taken any steps to keep this from happening again. I would strongly recommend finding another place to stay.
