Description

The Hostelz.com Review

For those of you familiar with the British comedy series of the 70's that this is place is named after, I'm happy to tell you that this Fawlty Towers bears little resemblance to the chaos on TV. A very professionally run hostel that is a lot more luxurious than it has the right to be at these budget prices.

The Location

Fawlty Towers is right on the main street, Mosi-Oa-Tunya opposite of the Mosi-Oa-Tunya Mall, just south of the city centre

Rooms and Bathrooms

The double and twin rooms are built on two sides of a large, spacious, almost football pitch-sized garden. All beds have mozzie nets & the mattresses we slept on were very comfortable with clean, crisp bed linen. The rooms are very large, clean and there is plenty of cupboard space. Some of the dorms have secure lockers, but not all of them, so bring your own padlock. There are four 6-bed dorms, one 8-bed dorm and one with three beds. There are a couple of en suite rooms downstairs with 4 beds each. There are, however only two showers upstairs for, potentially, 35 guests! The showers and toilets are however, kept scrupulously clean with plenty of toilet paper.

Common Spaces

The reception area, which doubles as the bar, is populated with comfy sofas. There are tables & chairs just outside by the pool with plenty of sun loungers. The common toilets and showers were as clean as you could expect for a well-visited place. Upstairs in the dorm block, there is a small restaurant with reasonably priced food, with free tea and coffee all day. A big sitting room with more comfy sofas make the dorm block more comfortable than many would have a right to expect at these budget prices. There is also a book exchange. There is free WiFi with a strong signal, even upstairs in the dorms. A spacious kitchen for self caterers is found in one corner of the garden and is very well-equipped with two fridges, an oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, plenty of pots and pans. An activities office will book all the usual falls adventures, such as white water rafting, booze cruises, bungee jumping, etc. If you're in need of some pampering, there is also a hair and beauty salon, as well as a massage parlor.

Summary

This is a superb place. Maintaining and even pushing the very high standards of Livingstone hostels. It is much quieter than it's rivals and caters for a wider variety of travelers, from small organised groups, to solo backpackers. Guests get free pancakes at 3:00 pm and a free shuttle to the Falls. Impressive, was the manager's attention to detail. In particular, her replies to every comment left about Fawlty Towers on TripAdvisor, good or bad. We can highly recommend this place!

What a great Place to stay
This has to be 1 of the best backpackers in the world, and I have stayed at hundreds over 30 years of traveling. Clean, well organised, safe, well located and friendly staff willing to assist organising your trips and needs. The on-site bar, pool and restaurant means you don't have to go out and be accosted by the hawkers. If you are on a budget, the supermarket across the road has everything you'll ever need to self cater and chill out at cheaper prices. Kitchen was good from what I saw, but I didn't use this. Ok, being in middle of town it was a bit noisy at night, but I always travel with ear plugs, and after a hard days activities, was wiped out and would sleep through an earthquake. The nightlife is close by if this is what you want, but the staff keep it quiet in the hostel after 10pm, and we respect them for this. Mosquito nets on the dorm beds were 100%, and if you want some luxury, there are new units built with a/c and en suites for $60 couple. These seems popular, so book ahead in the high season I think. The free pancakes at 3pm was the clincher for me over another backpackers (not that I am rating this place down). I maybe come back to Livingstone next year, and will definitely stay here again. Thanks to Basil and the staff at Fawlty Towers.

AMAZING. It was so cheerful and the staff were so friendly and we loved it. We want to come back just for the free pancakes every day. Richard the owner was hilarious and they all made sure we got the best deals. You made our holiday!

Absolutely amazing — this is possibly the best hostel I've ever visited. The staff are friendly and organize anything you want, from bungee jumping (yes, 111 meters off the Vic Falls bridge seemed like a good idea from the comfort of the hostel) to elephant rides. The only very slight downside is that the top bunks beds are VERY high and don't have ladders, so if you're short, it's probably best to get a bottom bunk if possible! The lunch by the pool is highly recommended, as are the pancakes. In fact, everything there is highly recommended — you just have to go there!!!

It is a beautiful and peaceful oasis. We stayed for three days, just reading and relaxing before we even made our way to the falls.
