La Casa de Zarela Reviews

La Casa de Zarela is a gem, a real "home away from home" for backpackers wanting a cozy base from which to explore the Cordilleras. To us, the best part about this hostel is the owner, Zarela. Not only will she try to make your stay as comfortable as possible, she has a ton of great tips about local hikes and attractions -- and she's a great person to chat with over a cup of her authentic chai tea!

The Location

La Casa de Zarela is located in of the city of Huaraz, in Peru. It's uphill (northwest) of the Plaza de Armas, but within walking distance of "downtown" Huaraz. Most bus stations are an inexpensive mototaxi ride away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

La Casa de Zarela has several types of rooms (including privates and dorms), depending on your preference. We stayed in the female "dorm" room, which doesn't really fit the description of a "normal" dorm at a hostel. The female dorm room has a handful of single beds lined up next to each other, each outfitted with several warm blankets (needed in that altitude!) and its own bedside table. There are lockers available in the rooms if you wish to use them.

The female dorm has a private, clean, and spacious bathroom with a hot shower, which is shared with the other women in your room. The staff makes sure to come in daily to replace the toilet paper, make the beds, and clean the dorm and bathroom.

Common Spaces

There are a ton of common spaces at La Casa de Zarela! There is a spacious (if old-fashioned) indoor dining room on the first floor, where the free Continental breakfast (two pieces of pan Andena, French-press coffee, freshly-squeezed juice, jam, and butter) is served. Eggs can be added to the meal for a small additional fee. The dining room also has a bar, where you can try something alcoholic or enjoy one of Zarela's many herbal teas. We tried the homemade chai tea -- served hot in a French-press after a grueling hike, it certainly hit the spot!

Aside from this, there is a terrace on each floor (four in all) where you can hang out, read, and/or eat. The terrace on the second floor has a little wood-burning stove for heat that you can light yourself, and the third-floor terrace has a heat lamp, allowing you to sit outside even when the altitude makes it chilly!

On the fourth floor, at the top of a spiral staircase, is the kitchen. It has a gas stove and oven that you can use, but the owner requests that you put a small tip into the glass jar beside it when you do. The kitchen articles are a bit bare-bones, but sufficient if you just want to cook yourself a basic meal. There is also a nice little terrace outside the kitchen.

The hostel is not what you would consider a "party hostel" -- it's more like a base camp for serious trekkers/climbers who are either returning from or about to set out for the nearby Cordillera. While we were there (in the low season), it was sort of empty, but the few people we met were cool and interesting, and Zarela's motherly presence makes it homey.

Our experience in this hostel was wonderful. It's clean, cozy, and safe, and the owner is a cool lady who is very involved in the local community. This hostel is highly recommended!

Oh Zarela, my mom in another country, how do you do it? The logistics, the hot showers, the nights at vagamundo and that dance place (forgot the name), the marker, the burritos, the breakfast, the rooms, OK so anyway for all you travelers this is the best hostel in the World, not to mention Peru. I'm considering quiting my job stateside and I'm going to be the chef and bartender (once I convince Zarela to have a bar (too loud for my guests, she says)) Cheers.

This is my favorite place in Huaraz; you will feel like you're at home.

I have stayed there four years now. Highly recommended. The coffee is not that good.

This is a nice hotel in a great part of Huaraz, with fantastic breakfasts (you won't find better coffee). Zarela is by far the best hostess anyone could meet. If you are looking for climbing, hiking, or biking information, Zarela has it. She will arrange guides and transportation. If you are looking for accommodation in Huaraz, look no further.

La Casa de Zarela Reviews from the Web

Liked: very helpful lady manager. lovely plants in the building Didn't like: nothing

Liked: Zarela was very friendly and helpful, breakfast was very nice and inexpensive, we were able to get and early check in which was great. There are lots of nice terraces and sitting areas, and great photos of the Cordillera Blanca around the house. Didn't like: I sent several e-mails in advance and did not receive a response: seems the spam filter got rid of them and they were never seen. So if you don't hear back: call! Zarela speaks English very well, so don't be timid if your spanish is (like mine) catastrophic.

Liked: Zarela the owner was great and helpful. Didn't like: was some parts under construction, thus a lot of noise.
