The Hostelz.com Review
Castle Hostel Istanbul is actually set in a little apartment located on the third floor of a small building. It is very small -- just a few rooms -- but sweet. The receptionists don't speak much English, but they are so friendly, kind, and helpful and are also very flexible with early or late check-in, and are glad to help you store your belongings before or after your stay.
The Location
The hostel is located in a great area, in the heart of Sultanahmet. The tram is really close, and most of the main tourist attractions are within a short walking distance. There are many exchange places, banks, restaurants, shops -- you name it, it's around. Ferries to the Asian side are not too far either, and the public transportation to/from both airports is decent, although Ataturk Airport is closer. The hostel also offers an airport shuttle service for an extra charge. The area seems pretty calm and quiet at night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
As there is no real public space here, the rooms are very nice -- they are big enough to move around and leave your belongings. There are little closets and cabinets around, so you can get very comfy. There are no lockers though, and reception encourages you not to leave any valuables around. There are plenty of power outlets spread around, but no reading lights (there's just one main light in the rooms). The temperature feels quite nice and cozy, as there is both a heater and an air conditioner. The shared bathrooms are ok and are comfortable and clean. They're basic, but work well and provide enough space.
Common Spaces
Sadly, this is the downside of the hostel -- there's no place to hang out really, except in your room. There is a small kitchen, and it's possible to use the dishes and cook, but it is small. Breakfast is not included, by the way. There is a little sitting area in reception, but it isn't much. So if you're looking for a social atmosphere, you might want to check some other options. There is Wi-Fi throughout the hostel and it works very well.
Summary
Even though it's a sweet little place to stay, there are probably better and more appealing options around. That being said, it does feel very homey and cozy here, and we had a rather comfortable stay.
