HosteLima is the most economical option for staying in the expensive Miraflores district. It's certainly a budget hostel; for just a bit more you can stay in a significantly nicer hostel. But if you're pinching pennies and want to stay in Miraflores, HosteLima will get the job done.
HosteLima is quite an optimal location for visiting the nightlife in Miraflores. It's just tucked away from the main social center of the barrio, Parque Kennedy. So it's a quiet place to stay, but just a short walk to the bars and restaurants around Parque Kennedy and the great ceviche available in Mercado Surquillo. The only downside is the distance from the beach and the various parks along the coast. Even so, it's an easy walk to these attractions, just slightly less accessible.
The guests are varied in background and the hostel caters to Israeli guests with many signs and tourism information in Hebrew. It's a typically respectful and quiet crowd. Guests are sociable, but not a lot of partying is going on in the hostel itself. Due to the proximity to Parque Kennedy, you might end up with some folks wandering into the hostel late into the night or early in the morning. Even these revelers seem to keep it together and aren't too disruptive to others with more normal sleep schedules.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel itself is quite large, with numerous dorm rooms throughout. The rooms don't have a lot of space and when fully occupied, most of the floor space is occupied by bags. It can be a bit of a maze to get to your bed and will often require some shuffling of bags to access the pull-out lockers underneath the beds, but it's not unmanageable. A worse fault is the terrible sagging mattresses in the rooms. Also, the quarters are woefully lacking in power plugs -- there are only two plugs for a room of eight. Luckily, the guests during our stay were all reasonable about time sharing and charging outside of the rooms in this case.
The bathrooms are communal spaces with individual stalls. They are kept reasonably clean, given that there are a lot of guests using the same space. Hand soap is provided and there is ample space to hang or place things at the sink and in the showers. The water pressure in the showers is good and there is plenty of very hot water.
The highlight of the common space is the dining area with great, light, large wooden tables, and a bar. It's a very pleasant place to take breakfast and visit with other travels. The other spaces unfortunately leave much to be desired. The kitchen is very under-equipped and it takes some hunting to find the utensils. There is a decent amount of counter space and two sinks, but in general it's not a very pleasant place to prepare meals.
The TV sitting room is where most guests hang out during the day. It's not anything special, but it is a decently comfortable place to sit with plenty of couches and a nice TV. The roof terrace is the most disappointing aspect of the property. It has a large footprint, but it's entirely empty except for a small area of broken-down couches and only two outlets for charging. It's primarily just a place to smoke, but it has potential to be a much more interesting space.
The security in the hostel is very good. You will need to ring the bell each time to be admitted entry and the person working reception will take the time to verify your name and room number if they don't recognize you. There are lockers underneath the bed and metal lockers in the hall outside of the dorm rooms.
The amenities of the hostel include Wi-Fi and free breakfast. The Wi-Fi functions throughout the property even though only one of the routers seems to be functioning. It's a bit finicky at times and has trouble connecting, but there are also decent periods of strong signal. The free breakfast is simple standard fare for Lima hostels, consisting bread with butter and jam, coffee (instant), and a selection of fruits.
Overall, the hostel is in a great location for Miraflores and it's a cheap place to stay. Nothing besides the price makes it stand out as a great place to stay, but at the same time it doesn't have any grave faults. In a word, the hostel is sufficient across the board; it's not the type of place where you will be excited to extend your stay, but not a place out of which you'll be rushing as soon as possible.
