Most friendly and helpful receptionist ever, so lovely and great first impression of the hostel. Really good breakfast. Close proximity to the city center. The room was clean and quiet, with an excellent shower. I like the service and up to date room with all properly arranged items. Staff supported me alot and helped me to visit different places. Food is ok for foreigners. Its good only Chinese food. So if you like Chinese food then it's good for you. They care for all my necessary thing. The price is good and the service is best. The location is friendly for visitors.
The Best Hostel is situated in a quiet area in a natural environment and still only a ten-minute walk from Kandy city. They have a chill-out place with a TV (dish satellite). They offer free wifi & free do-it-yourself breakfast. Clean and comfortable rooms equipped with fans, dorm-style with a choice of male or female-only accommodation or double bedroom. All the rooms have hot water showers. This hostel is listed as the "grand dame" of Kunming hostels. Sadly, it looks that way. It needs sprucing up and needs dedicated floors for non-smoking.
The location is good-- a short 5 minutes to Dong Feng Square and the metro.
Double room -- not worth the money
We stayed in a double room with one big bed. Unfortunately the walls were molded. The bathroom was chinese-clean.

Ok but didnt meet our expectation
The location is great but when you check in the receptionist are not that friendly but at least they speak english. They can book for you train tickets or else and help you with the direction but don't expect more than you ask. Regarding the room it s a bit completed to get there (4 stairways+walk trough the bar then the garden) then when you get in it is a bit disappointing. The wall paper is unsticking with a lot of humidity. As it was winter the very negative point was that there were no heating -- very same temperature out/indoor so quite freezing. Still electric blanket provided. Food and drink were ok and good mix of asians and westerners.

Excellent location, nice staff, legitimately homemade food in the pub. The breakfast was ok but I'd recommend getting out and going to the French Caf, which is excellent. We stayed in a double private room which I think was a bit overpriced. For the price I would have preferred either staying in a cheap Chinese chain hotel or just paying a bit more and staying in a nice hotel. Not much conversation in the pub -- everyone is playing with their phone or iPad. Hosteling has changed since I was younger.
Good environment, clean and very warm like stay at home. I have request delayed check in until mid night (after 12 mid night, around 2am morning), they still reserve for us.
Nice hostel close to the Green Lake
In total we stayed there three times for several days. The twin rooms are more spacious than the doubles, try to avoid rooms on the first floor or close to the elevator. Unfortunately, the last time we went there our room was a bit humid with fungus on the walls and we couldn't get another room. We had the impression that the hostel is very well booked both by Chinese and international travelers. A big plus is the restaurant and attached bar (big range of German beer) and the room gets crowded quickly during breakfast and dinner time. The menu has both Chinese and Western dishes including delicious breakfast. It only sometimes takes about 30 minutes to get a coffee or tea in the morning. There's also a backyard to sit outside and an upstairs room with computers. The Wifi was a bit shaky but if it works it's also available in the rooms. The staff speaks English and can provide you information about buses, trains and day trips. We never had a taxi driver who found the way to the hostel (even with the map provided by the hostel) therefore we always asked them to drop us off at the Green Lake Hotel and walked 5 min to the Upland.
The best China can offer
This hostel is cheap, well situated, the common rooms are beautiful, the kids running thr bar are smart and nice, the bed sheets are the most comfortable and the city of Kunming is one of the best in China. Aside from the grossly overpriced bar/restaurant and some of the receptionists' attitude, this place is great.
Kunming Upland International Youth Hostel Reviews from the Web
Loved this place! I would definitely go back if I am in Kunming. The location is across the street from a beautiful park and next to a bus stop which can take us to the metro. I stayed in the female dorm room, and was impressed at the cleanliness and security. Everyone had their own locked cabinet to keep luggage, and while the key was a bit janky and didn't always work, the staff were quick to come fix it. Super fun environment! Highly recommend!
I stayed here twice during December 2021 and I wish I could have stayed longer. The staff here are kind and friendly, especially giving me advice on how and where to get a covid-19 test. The location is perfect, in a peaceful little street which is just a few metres from a main road that leads to Green Lake Park, and there are lots of good restaurants and cafes not too far away. The subway is about a 15-minute walk away. There is a relaxing bar and outdoor garden area too. Hope to stay again!
The hostel is clean and well located. However, the staff at the front desk weren't very helpful! We asked for advice of places to visit in the city and outside, as well as how to get there and the person at the from desk was not only clueless but didn't really seem to want to help us. They spoke flue English so language wasn't a problem; it was clear that the person was new and didn't really feel like assisting us. The staff at the bar were very friendly though!
Stayed x2. Mainly writing this to single out Molmes and his buddy (can't remember the name -- sorry) at the front desk for helping me book a last minute ride-share down south to get part of the way toward the rice terraces in Yuanyang (remote and not as easily connected area). In Yunnan you really need help from locals or at least native speakers to get around, especially if you go off the beaten track. Also: Cool hostel with friendly staff, all amenities, good coffee, chill common area.
Everything was fine.I was at ur place 5 years ago,4 years ago and this year too. I will be back within a few days.
Liked: The helpfulness and friendliness of staff right down to the very polite housekeeping lady! Love the coziness and atmosphere of this hostel, especially the public areas (caf, lobby, lounges, outdoor seating terrace). Staff at reception desk ensures all your questions are answered along with good informative recommendations on what to see, do and how to get there. Truly a centre for backpackers. Large variety of kitchen meals and drinks from pub/caf. Rooms and dorm beds are very clean and comfortable! Didn't like: A bit like a maze spread over a few floors. Layout of the hostel is all over the place and inconsistent in terms of where the rooms, bathrooms and toilets are located. Inability for guests to bring their own outside food to be consumed in the interior pub/caf area (only food purchased from them). Only one key card is given even though there were 2 of us (additional key card costs 100 Yuan). Hot water in showers are sometimes not hot, or need a longer buffer time to arrive.
It's a great hostel!
Liked: The food and the atmosphere in the main common area/restaurant were very good. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hostel is located a short walk to the Green Lake and Yuantong Temple and is also a half-hour walk to the night market. Didn't like: My room was very clean, but the shower seemed to have a drainage issue.
Liked: Very social communal area. Didn't like: Bathrooms could be bigger.
Liked: Its a big place so potentially lots of people to meet and have a good time with. We also rented some bikes which were good quality and cheap. The bar prices and food are okay too. Plus 3RMB per day bag store is really good particularly as you will very likely be in Kunming to start a bigger trip in Yunnan. Didn't like: We found certain members of stay rather frosty, and for a place called 'international' it doesn't seem 100% to be dealing with foreigners. Also several of the lockers in our room were broken and the locks broke off very easily when a lady came to fix them"
Liked: everything Didn't like: nothing
Liked: Great atmosphere, good food and very clean! Didn't like: Works going on so fewer shower & sink facilities but managed to use on other floors and they are trying to improve these areas so overall all up and running for anyone after end of Sept 2014.
Liked: Very comfortable beds. Attractive setting. Didn't like: Rooms could do with a dehumidifier
Liked: Staffs are very helpful, kindly and friendly. Didn't like: Almost of customers are chinese, so they spit everywhere(not only common area but also inside room). And no quiet time, therefore, they continue to chatting loudly in room and keep turning on the room light. Not suitable for sleep. At the last, they always keep the door opened intendly. Security card is useless.
