Esperanto Hostel is a small, friendly hostel located just one street back from the beach. It caters mainly to backpackers, who are attracted by the relaxed vibe and fantastic location (perfect for both surf and parties). It is separated from the craziness of downtown Montañita by the river, giving the area a more relaxed vibe ... although bars, clubs, and restaurants are just a few minutes' walk away! The rooftop is a great location to chill in a hammock and watch the sunset.
The Location
Esperanto is just one street back from the beach; the rooftop has sea views and you can hear the waves from the rooms. It is just the other side of the river that separates it from the busy downtown area of Montañita by a few minutes' walk. It is a seven-minute walk from the main bus stop. To reach the hostel, you have to walk down a dirt road, which runs alongside the river. The road is accessed either from the beach or from the main road. This is a popular tourist area containing numerous hostels and hotels.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms at Esperanto Hostel are clean, cozy, and have windows looking out toward the sea. They contain sturdy wooden bunk beds with clean white sheets (and warm blankets available on request). Although the rooms are fairly small, they only sleep four people making them some of the least-crowded dorms available in Montañita. Each bed comes with a large drawer where you can store your things. They also have secure lockers, each containing a safe box and plug socket so you can leave your phone charging securely. You can fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves (if your roommates aren’t too loud!). Mosquito nets are available on request. Private rooms are also available.
Bathrooms are basic but functional. They are small, with just enough space for a toilet, sink, and warm(ish) shower. They appear to be cleaned regularly but could do with a little extra attention (liquid soap dispensers remained empty for the length of our stay).
Each dorm room shares one bathroom. For one of the dorms, the bathroom is just outside the room. The other dorm has a bathroom on another level. You can request a key for the bathroom if you would prefer to lock it so that people in other rooms don’t use it (we never had any problems, but apparently when the hostel is very crowded this can become a problem!).
Common Spaces
The open-plan ground floor contains the majority of the common spaces; there is a communal kitchen right next to reception, and a few seats gathered around a TV in the corner.
The communal kitchen is fairly clean and of a decent size and has bar seating down one side. A self-serve buffet breakfast including bread, coffee, tea, and fresh fruits is served here each morning (included in the room price). The hostel is missing a decent seating area in which to eat, although at the time of our stay, building work is ongoing in the garden area to extend the hostel and improve communal areas. Esperanto Hostel has a rooftop with hammocks and sea views. Despite being four stories high, there is excellent Wi-Fi coverage throughout rooms and communal areas.
Summary
Esperanto Hostel has friendly and personal feel. You are sure to meet the enthusiastic owner during your stay, who will most likely give you tips on things to do and ask for your opinion on the hostel! The dorms are bright; secure; and have clean, comfy beds. There is a decent communal kitchen and a simple breakfast buffet is included. The beach is just a few metres away, and clubs and bars can be reached within a few minutes' walk. The rooftop provides a nice environment to watch the sunset or relax in a hammock. It's a great hostel with a relaxed and friendly vibe!
