Large and brightly colored, Arequipay Backpackers Downtown is easily found, and once inside, you'll discover a fun and relaxing interior with plenty of amenities. When signing in, the front desk requests that you acknowledge the rules of the hostel, which include a section mentioning that this is not a party hostel and is a place of relaxation, so if you're looking to party, it's a good idea to head elsewhere. The staff are warm and inviting and happy to help you book tours, which are offered at a discount through the hostel.
The Location
Located about six blocks from Arequipa's main square, Plaza de Armas, Arequipay Backpackers Downtown is not the most ideally located hostel in its class. Walking to the main square takes about ten minutes, which is short relative to many cities, but with so many hostels within just a few blocks of the square, it can seem far. That being said, the hostel is in a safe area and if you are looking to get away from the bustle of the city's main square and into a more local's section of Arequipa, this may be a great choice for you. There are a few convenience stores and local restaurants nearby, but nothing like the concentration of choices closer to the square.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are all roomy and comfortable; each bottom bunk includes its own curtain to block out those morning rays when you're trying to sleep in. Even the ten-bed dorm is a great choice, as it's separated into two rooms, feeling more like a six-bed and four-bed dorm put together, which is great for privacy and noise reduction.
The bathrooms are kept clean with soap and hand towels in all of them as well as twenty-four-hour hot water and good water pressure.
Common Spaces
The hostel is definitely not short on common spaces. Upon entering the hostel, there is a game room on the right with billiards and darts, a great place to hang out and shoot around, although any pool shark would be quick to point out the definite need for replacement cues, as the ones that are there are currently approaching (or way past) the end of their lifespan. Also adjacent to the lobby is the main TV room that boasts a large flat-screen with Netflix and many DVDs.
There are two large outdoor patios with comfortable chairs, a ping-pong table, foosball, and another spare TV room in the back with a PS3, although there are five different TV remotes and no one seems to be able to get everything working to one hundred percent functionality.
The included breakfast is decent, offering white bread, bananas, instant oatmeal, strawberry jam, tea, and instant coffee. The hostel's kitchen is also decent and relatively well stocked, with two refrigerators.
The Wi-Fi signal might be one of the best in South America, with zero downtime and a strong signal around the entire property.
Summary
Arequipay Backpackers Downtown is a great place outside of the center of Arequipa to chill and meet people. There is a strong "no-partying" rule put into place, which keeps like-minded people coming to the hostel. The price is fair for what you get, but if you're looking to be where the action is, there are more affordable options closer to the city's center. However, if you've already seen the city's center and are just looking for a relaxing and comfortable hostel with good amenities, Arequipay Backpackers Downtown is a great option.

SOCIAL BUT RESPONSIBLE. We are currently following all procedural advice from local governments to stop the transmission of COVID-19 and taking every necessary measure to ensure your safety, comfort, and happiness.
We have large outdoor areas that perfectly allow social distancing. Our rooms/dorms and interior common areas are spacious and with large windows that guarantee very good ventilation. You will enjoy the back garden where you will be able to journal and read on our hammocks enjoying the sunny days. Our common areas will remain open, however, the capacity has decreased and is detailed in each area.

Even though we are situated downtown, we are in a peaceful neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of the streets around the main square in a private neighborhood. Our location is perfect because it's near banks, supermarkets, bars, and principal tourist attractions.
