Hostel Alice is a great hostel, which is professionally managed and takes care of the needs of the traveler. Besides that, the location is exceptional. It provides entertainment and good facilities.
The Location
The hostel is located close to the metro station Villa Madalena and therefore you can easily get there and you'll just need to walk a couple of minutes. Besides that, there are some convenience stores around the metro station and just a few minutes in the other direction is a supermarket. Also just around the corner there are some trendy restaurants, which offer a good deal for a lunch buffet.
Please keep the street name and the house number in mind (Rua Harmonia, 1275) since there is only the house number and a flower on the outside to show that it is a hostel. On the inside, you will see right away the reception/bar, where you check in and also can buy some convenience products like toothpaste and pasta. Besides that, you will notice the cool drawings and paintings on the wall. Also the decoration is very tasteful and fits in well.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms and the main bathrooms are located upstairs. There are three different dorm rooms and a male and a female bathroom upstairs. The dorm rooms are clean and kept in good condition. There is air conditioning for the night to keep the rooms cold if necessary. Besides that the lockers are inside the room and every bed has its own light and power plug. The beds are very comfortable and invite you to rest well.
The bathrooms upstairs where you have a shower and a toilet -- they are kept clean and are very modern. The outside bathroom is kept in excellent condition as well.
Common Spaces
The outside area of the hostel with some chairs, tables, and hammocks invite you to sit down and enjoy the beauty of the garden. Within the kitchen is a big table, where people come together to have breakfast together and dinner as well. The common area of the hostel is within the reception area. There you find the TV with Nintendos of different generations and the free-to-use computers as well.
The hostel staff play some music to entertain the guests on the sofas. Here people come together to have a drink or two. As a rule, alcohol is only allowed from the hostel bar.
Summary
Hostel Alice is a great hostel, which is professionally managed and therefore suits the needs of travelers. Attention is paid to details and to the atmosphere as well. The included breakfast is great with tea and coffee, toast and buns, ham and cheese, as well as scrambled eggs. Also fruits and some cake are offered. The good facilities in combination with the location result in a great place to stay in So Paulo.
Attention to Detail by a Hands on Owner
I am writing this after my 3rd stay at Hostel Alice in the last year. I love this little hostel that is more like a guest house in the Bohemian enclave of Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo for several reasons. Of course it has all the things you would expect from a top hostel. Super clean, organized, friendly and knowledgeable staff that are multilingual, high speed secure internet, great location a block from the metro subway stop, new comfortable mattresses, hot showers, some rooms with air-con if you need it, a beautiful backyard to lounge in and always an interesting mix of world travelers who are globetrotting as well as Brazilians using the hostel for a business trip to Sao Paulo. But I think the most important part of why this hostel is so successful is that its owner, Alice, is here at the hostel often and her attention to the detail's of running a top hostel is apparent. Of the 200+ hostels I have stayed in over the past 36 months in 96 countries so far, I put this hostel in the top 20 or top 10% of all hostels worldwide. Nice work Alice & Team!
A really VERY nice hostel, indeed.
I had high hopes of Hostel Alice and I was certainly not disappointed. Receptionists Marianna and Adrianne (spelling correct?) are friendly and very efficient. They advised me where to eat out in the neighbourhood, where to best buy football shirts for my nephews back home and which brands of Brazilian coffee to take home as souvenirs, for example. The owner, whose name I unfortunately cannot recall, also made an effort to make my stay as pleasant as possible. Two German boys with whom I stayed in a hostel in Trindade, and whom I 'sent' to stay at Hostel Alice when in So Paulo, were also quite impressed, not in the least by the cleanliness. Unfortunately, they did not realise that they could just help themselves to the fresh fruit in the kitchen anytime during the day. The only possible drawback of this hostel could have been its location in the suburb of Vila Madalena, but the truth is that the metro station is only a three-minute walk from the hostel and the station of Vila Madalena only 3 stops from Paulista station. This is nothing when one considers that one can, unfortunately (or fortunately, in this case), not really stay in downtown So Paulo. Staying at Hostel Alice made my visit to So Paulo very pleasant, indeed.
The staff is really nice and helpful. Even in crazy Corona-times we had a really nice stay at the hostel with all the people. Thanks for that and see you all one time again! :) greetings from Germany.
Good location, and it's really cool to have the bakery in the hostel, and the breakfast is not included but it's really worth the price! Internet works decently but it was really noisy because of the street so close, it made the building shake.
Really nice little hostel which was right by the metro station in Vila Madalena. It was clean, secure, and right by a vegan bakery so you can easily get some baked goods. In the evening, the bakery also brought some of their leftovers round to the hostel so the guests and staff could tuck in which was really lovely! The only issue we had was that the mattresses and pillows had a plastic cover, so we didn't sleep all that well as it wasn't that comfortable. But would definitely stay again.
Nice place. On weekends when the restaurant is not open, prepare to walk to one that is.
Amazing hostel in So Paulo. Safe neighbourhood and delicious vegan bakery! Staff is super friendly and go above and beyond to help you have the best experience....especially during the Carnival season. The experiences Ive had will stay with me forever. I wanna say thank you to Roman, the manager for all the help and Daniel for the great company and friendship. Id totally recommend this hostel to all my friends back home!
Liked: Nice property close to pubs and bars. Also next to metro station to get anywhere you want to go to. The staff is really friendly and helpful and hostel is nice and clean Didn't like: -
Great location (loads of bars and restaurants, cool and hip area, 2 min from metro station), clean hostel, helpful and laid-back staff, good breakfast
I only stayed 1 night as I had travelled up from Rio that day & was flying out to Bogota from Sao Paulo the next. The lady on duty (Karen) was really friendly. She also helped me when I tied to check on to my flight, there was a problem as the airline had changed the times without notifying me & would not let me check in without me contacting them. She phoned the airline for me & fixed the problem. The beds were comfy & the facilities were great. I would stay there again.
Good location, very helpful and friendly staff, clean rooms and they serve a good breakfast.
Liked: Good location with very friendly and helpful staff. Didn't like: Some fruits for the breakfast would be nice, as well as a hint, that the eggs are unboiled. But all in all you get a good value for your money.
Liked: N 1 hostel in sao paulo, it was very good exprience , the pepole are great, the hostel is cozy and friendly good breakfest and very clean. the owner is amazing and give very good atantion to the gusts. very close to the metro ( walking distance) love it Didn't like: nothing at all every thing perfect
Liked: We stayed in the only private ensuite room which was isolated from the rest so gave us some privacy. The hostel is also very clean and staff are helpful. Didn't like: The wi-fi could not entirely reach our private ensuite room as it was away from the rest of the house. Our shower did not have warm water on the first day, but the staff rectified the situation on the following day and refunded us the difference.
Liked: GREAT Hostel, one of the best hostels (if not the best) I've ever stayed in! Great location, nearby the metro, tasty breakfast (with homemade bread and cake), a nice chill out area (inside and outside) and really clean bathrooms. The staff is helpful with all your questions and Vila Madalena is such a great neighbourhood! Didn't like: Nothing!
Just outside the city centre so the area is pretty calm and feels safe. Easy to travel in to the city centre. Really friendly staff. Good breakfast, beds, showers and clean. It`s a pretty calm hostel but people come together in the evening to watch tv and I`m sure that if there had been more people around during my stay then we`d have gone out and enjoyed the night life. Good stay and a good night sleep.
Liked: Althought designed for backpacking, the experience ispleasant, clean environment, good facilities, friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast including daily fresh bread rolls and other home cooked treats, Denise and crew welcome you as 'friends' rather than 'clients' A really freat place to stay...Home from Home. Definitely a Hostel I would happily recommend and return to. Didn't like: Another Internet PC would be useful for busy times...
