Cat & Moose Backpackers Lodge Reviews

One of the many backpacker hostels near the centre of Cape Town, Cat & Moose Backpackers Lodge sits firmly at the cheaper end of the market.

The Location

This hostel is in a great location in the entertainment hub of Long Street, but it's right on the end of the street away from most of the noise. Cat And Moose gives exactly what you'd expect for the price.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Located in a house with internal courtyard, this basic place has a selection of doubles, plus dorms. It is very popular with Japanese travelers. The dorms are roomy and the beds good with firm mattresses. Lockers are provided and the dorm at the back of the house is recommended if you are a light sleeper, as the front dorm looks out over the busy road. The dorms, as all the rooms here, are pretty plain but clean. The front dorm has a balcony overlooking the road and straight down Long Street. The toilets and showers are fairly few and far between and rustic but clean. Hot water is twenty-four hours.

Common Spaces

There is a TV room between the front dorm and the kitchen with a comfortable sofa and chairs, and the courtyard is a pleasant place to sit outside in the shade. The small common kitchen is ok, with kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker, and fridge -- there's a lot of storage space. A wooden dining table sits beneath a colorful mural. The front dorm has a balcony with some plastic tables and chairs and two clothes dryers. There is free Wi-Fi here, but the signal is not good. Free tea and coffee are available all day, but you have to walk downstairs from the kitchen to reception for it. Cat & Moose are also Baz Bus agents and there is a travel agency next door for trips and tours of a more adventurous nature.

Providing some of the cheapest beds in Cape Town, Cat & Moose doesn't pretend to be anything other than good, basic accommodation. It's a bit scruffy and fairly plain, but it gives you what you pay for with no frills. The house is access controlled and there is CCTV. It also sits next door to the Turkish Baths. The location is the selling point -- right on Long Street and just a few minutes' walk from the bars and restaurants and around a ten-minute walk to the main bus and train station.

The Cat & Moose is a very nice hostel located in a bright orange old house at the end of Long Street (meters away from its bars and locals but far enough not to hear the noise at night). There are many spacious common rooms, two TV lounges, chill out areas and a pool lounge. There is a sunny courtyard and a small in-house bar which serves eat-as-much-as-you-can continental breakfasts for only 5 rands. All the rooms are situated on the 1st floor (US "2nd floor") nestled around the common kitchen, dining area and TV lounge.

There is a nice balcony overlooking Long Street, which is just about the perfect place to chill out or drink a beer or two... (note that the path to the balcony passes trough one of the dorms so if you want to go to sleep early at nights it may be wise to ask for one of the other dorms). The bathrooms and rooms are clean and cosy and the bed is made up every day, even in the dorms.

The best people work here! Jojo, Radolfo, and John thank you for a great stay.

Car parking is possible, but I even parked it many days and nights in front of the hostel, perfect! It's on Long Street. There's a swimming pool next door and supermarket till 23.00 across the street. Perfect place to stay (shame the internet cafe next door has closed down).

Cat & Moose Backpackers Lodge Reviews from the Web

Had a blast, these people made us feel so welcome in s/a. Showers are awesome, everything functions except for doors. Bring your own cutlery ;)

Cat and Moose Backpackers Lodge needs to upgrade the cleaniness and safety of the accomodation. The building had a nice touch and it is located very central. However, the female dorm was not worth staying, people were smoking in the room, there was food and mess everywhere and the overall atmosphere did not emit cleaniness and security. The hosts were very helpful, but I was overall disappointed.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Amazing staff ,

Clean and cosy and safe , feels like home away from home , Craig is super cool and helpful , in fact all the staff are

Will be back

Excellent , stayed here many years ago ,

The hostel has recently had a make cover and looks great , highly recommended, will definitely be back

When I looked on the website I saw a clean neat comfortable place but on arrival I was shocked beyond words. Most of the building was under renovation. It was beyond dirty and it looked like the rooms had not seen a deep clean in years. Lighting was very bad and the rooms smelly. The one room that I was taken to had not even been made up yet. The room I was given did not have a light in and the bathroom was full of furniture. The showers were dirty and very cold as there was no door on the room.

We were brutally attacked one morning at 03:20 and there were no support from management or the owners.

Place was filthy with rats and cockroaches everywhere.

To top it off they moved us into a lower class room that was so cold.

Stay away!

Hostel staffs are always helpful. They try to find the answer on my questions even about the places outside Cape Town.

Liked: Its really relaxed atmosphere and great staff. Didn't like: it can get really cold in the lounge area.

Liked: Good place, well located and nice staff Didn't like: Nothing

Liked: good location at the city centre Long St. Didn't like: nothing

Liked: Fine location, in the middle of things, yet quiet, good place to meet people. Didn't like: Nothing.

Nice place to stay. Room had everything you need, shared facilities were clean. Central location, nice and friendly staff.

Liked: Nothing. Didn't like: The (scarily high) bunk beds are so rickety you can feel every single movement from the other person so it's very hard to sleep. There's only 1 decent bathroom and that smelled strongly of a men's urinal. I kept my shoes on when going in there as the floor was dirty. The living room is like a black hole. The courtyard outside is quite pleasant.

the staff were lovely, so helpful and considerate.

Liked: Staff were very helpful, location is ideal (plenty of bars and restaurants and easy walking distance to the markets), rooms were clean and kitchen come in handy as well. Didn't like: The only issue we found was that the showers/hot water was a little tempremental.

Liked: Relaxed, quiet while being at the end of the road with lots of bars and restaurants on. Didn't like: We had our own double room (very good) but the door lock could have been more secure. There was no cooker, and only two hotplate rings working. If the hostel was busier, this may have been a problem.
