Hostel Lybeer Bruges Reviews

Hotel Lybeer is an excellent hostel in an adorable city. It's situated on a very quiet residential street about five minutes from the main sites (City Hall, Belfry, Church of the Holy Blood, etc). Once you get out of the train station, it's an easy 10 minute walk (cross the highway and follow the meandering path through the park until you can't go any farther. Then bear to the left past some cafes and in rapid succession, make two rights and a left).

While smelling a bit smoky (this is Europe, they all do), the place has old-fashioned charm and perfectly functional bathrooms in the hall. The rooms have a sink and just enough furniture to not get in the way. It's totally quiet, even as the crowds come in around midnight. And the heat works really well, too! Always a bonus.

The best part about this place was the all-out typical Belgian breakfast, which is included in the price - have your fill of cheese, breads, cereal, yogurt and even some meats. There's also free Internet, but it's painfully slow. Lybeer was a good bargain in a great location.

First Hostel

This was the first hostel I've stayed in and it was awesome! The environment is wonderful, the people at the help desk had great recommendations, and the environment was super fun! Everything was very clean and the shower worked well! With the happy hours (and the fantastic Belgian beer) the environment was so fun, but a rowdy group was up until about 4 or 5 a.m. one morning so that made it a bit hard to sleep (not really the hostel's fault though!) Overall, the hostel added to a perfect trip to Bruges. Note -- if you have an kind of injury and can't walk well there is no elevator and the stairs are super super steep so I wouldn't recommend it for you.

The kitchen is good and the others are also not bad.

The kitchen and staff are good. The others are also not bad. The price is worth!

Just minor backdraws

Pro -- good location, nice atmosphere, very nice bathrooms, good sized rooms. Con -- no curtains or shades on windows; staff could be nicer; there is no elevator in the house and the staircase is very, very steep so this is definitely not a place for people who have trouble walking!!!!

Excellent place to stay

The kitchen is clean, new and has enough utensils and essentials (like oil) to cook with. The rooms are bright, new and the dorm room I stayed in (number 2) has each bed in a separate pod with power socket and a light. The showers/bathrooms are new, clean and the showers are really good. Great temperature control and lots of hooks/space to put stuff. The staff were really nice and the wifi was mostly good although it had a few times when it didn't want to work. The beer tasting and walking tour were also quite good, I'd recommend them. I didn't have any issues with noise but even if it were noisy, it's a hostel. Bring ear plugs and an eye mask.

Not bad, not great

Building in the old part of town was nice plus the communal areas were good, room had no curtains though plus had neighbours just out the window building a deck, which didn't help with sleeping.

Beautifully renovated

Nice short stay at the hostel. Friendly staff, lively atmosphere, clean rooms and fairly clean bathrooms. Although the amount of sanitary facilities for the amount of people is poor. And a curtain at the window would have been nice too. But overall a pleasant stay.

Interesting place

One thing you can say about the Lybeer is that it has character. It's obviously a fairly old building and well in need of renovation which is currently ongoing. There are little humorous notes on lots of the walls apologising for the condition of things (the stair rail, the kitchen, the first floor) but fundamentally these won't affect your stay unless you let them. I wouldn't want to do too much cooking of my own until they get the new kitchen finished though. The top floor (where I stayed) has all been recently decorated, although not to the highest of standards, and the bathrooms are already looking slightly the worse for wear. I got up fairly early and avoided the rush but I can imagine that later risers may find a bit of a queue for the showers since the bed-to-shower ratio was quite high. The bed itself was fine, if a little close to the one next to it, but I can accept that this is probably unavoidable with the place being the size it is. The breakfast was perfectly ok -- their justification for charging an extra 4 for it was that it featured all sorts of nice stuff, but in reality it's a pretty standard hostel breakfast (cereal, bread, coffee, juice, cheese/meat slices), for which 4 is a perfectly fair price as long as you factor it into the price you're comparing against. Little in the way of secure storage, and although they'll happily hang onto your bags in reception they're in and out of there quite a bit so I'd be wary of leaving anything too valuable in there for too long.

Still under renovation ...

The hostel is pretty old and currently under renovation. The room I stayed in was apparently renovated, but still appear really cramped and small, beds are really close to each other. There were also mosquitoes inside the building and of course the room, not sure if it is because of the construction going on. Bathroom was renovated as well but i need to walk one floor up for it, and the sinks are not in the same room as the toilets which was a bit weird ...
