Frasers on Rainbow Beach is a hostel located in the small beach town of Rainbow Beach, with the majority of guests staying here at the beginning and end of trips to Fraser Island. Tours to the island are run from Dingo Backpackers which is thirty seconds' walk down the road from Frasers and are a must-do for anyone traveling the east coast.
The Location
Frasers is on the same street as the bus services drop off in Rainbow Beach, so no long walks or transfers are required. The beach is less than five minutes' walk from the hostel and is generally much quieter than others on the coast -- Rainbow Beach is a very small town. The hostel also offers free walks to the local sand-dunes (great to see!) to watch the sunset and try boomerang throwing. Rainbow Beach itself has no large supermarkets, however a shop that sells everything food-wise is located around ten minutes' walk away. This is more expensive than the supermarkets, but the bar area in the hostel itself has a large selection of cheap meals that can be purchased between 6 and 8 p.m.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms at the hostel are very basic, and all have ensuite (which means if one person is using the bathroom, the seven others have to wait). We stayed in an eight-share and a nine-share while we were here. The beds are comfy and the rooms are clean, although they could do with a bit of upkeep -- there are a few holes and the windows didn't close in one of the rooms.
Common Spaces
The hostel bar has a great atmosphere and sells quite cheap meals and drinks (for Australia, that is!). There is generally something going on each night such as a live band or games. The kitchen is quite good and there is enough space for everyone staying here but you do need a lighter for the cookers. There is a free ping-pong table and pool table for guest to use (the quality isn't great, however) as well as a swimming pool, although no one used this at all while we were staying. There is also twenty-four-hour internet access, which is run by Global Gossip.
Summary
Overall, this is a good place to stay if you want see Rainbow Beach and a good place to get to Fraser Island. We would happily stay here again if visiting the area, as there is a really good atmosphere.
Ok
The hostel was ok, it had no a/c and a lot of the ceiling fans did not work so it was very hot in the rooms, the dorms were eight-plus so this doesn't help! The tours to Fraser Island from this hostel are done through four-by-four safaris, these are not recommended! If you have a choice do not use this company! They do not know what safety means -- ten-plus in an overloaded vehicle, which is top heavy and very likely to tip over also they charge you for everything even thought these vehicles are very worn, old, and a lot of the damage is unavoidable. They do not know what customer service is -- a very shoddy outfit -- beware!
Fantastic Hostel
We have been to this hostel twice now, both times have been fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful, always something going on, thursday night was the best live music we have seen. So much to do as well as Fraser Island, and Fraser Island was incredible.
This hostel was clean and a little aged but there was no aircon in any room (definitely necessary in the height of summer with high humidity) and you're not allowed into the common area after 9 p.m. (nowhere else open in the area either. Fine for a one night stopover before heading to Fraser Island though.
I was at this hostel in September, on the week that England won the Ashes. There was some celebration to say the least. Great hostel tho, good value for money and great staff, always there to help. Thanks so much for the great time we had there!
Place was nice enough. Kitchen was crawling with insects in the summer months, but apart from that it's a nice enough place to stay for a day or two.
It's been almost two years that my friends and I were at this hostel, but we still talk a lot about the great time we had in Rainbow Beach. Big cheers, and keep up the good job.
This is a good hostel. It's clean, the kitchen facilities are good, there are cheap meals in the restaurant, and it has a bar. The staff were friendly and helpful, too.
