Makako Chill Out Hostel

The Review

Makako Chill Out Hostel has a lovely location in Cartagena's Old Town to help you relax and plan your trips.

The Location

Makoko Chill Out Hostel is located in the heart of the world-famous Old Town of Cartagena. The hostel is perfectly situated close to all sights in Old Town, like the Clock Tower, many lovely churches and plazas, and the narrow streets with colourful houses. The hostel is in one of the old-fashioned houses, and it's wonderful to look at from the outside. You will not need a car to get around and there is actually little parking. It is recommended to take a taxi from the airport (ten minutes' drive). The beaches in Bocagrande can be visited by taxi, bus or it is a nice walk of twenty-five minutes. Transcaribe is the brand-new bus system in Cartagena whereby you are close to the station "Centro." Getsemani -- the suburb where many bars, restaurants, and clubs are -- is also in walking distance.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Since the hostel is in Old Town, it is a old house, so you can tell it is not in brand-new shape, but it is very charming. Makako has basic five-, six-, and ten-bed mixed dorms. The beds are comfortable and the air conditioning helps a lot to keep away the heat at night. The bathrooms with cold water are basic as well.

Common Spaces

There are quite a few common spaces in the hostel. Most outstanding is the big living room where you can hang out and chill with friends; it's also a perfect place to watch movies. From the romantic balcony, you can follow what's going on in the narrow, old, and lovely street. Wi-Fi in the hostel is ok, and you are also able to use the common computer. There is also a couch area in the entry hall. If you want to chill out more, use the hammocks on the outside area. The kitchen area is equipped ok and has a huge fridge. Laundry service is offered as well. The hostels offers as well many day trips several islands around Cartagena and a volcano where you can bathe in mud.

It's not the newest hostel, but it has a charming location and is a good place to stay if you want to explore the Old Town of Cartagena. It's close to restaurants and supermarkets. It can be considered a social, relaxed hostel, but not a party hostel.

Clean, good location
I stayed here for my first 4 nights upon entering Colombia. It was easy enough to find and the location is great for exploring the "Centro Historico." The Exito grocery store nearby was very handy for grabbing snacks and liquor. I found the beds were made up daily with fresh linens, and the bathrooms were always clean. The common area was nice for relaxing and the kitchen was usually open for making a meal or grabbing a nice strong cup of free coffee. I only wish the main dorm had a rotating fan to supplement the AirCon -- otherwise no complaints. The staff were friendly and very helpful!! Don't forget to make sure you learn Spanish before you venture into Colombia!

From the moment we rang the bell we felt welcomed but, it wasn't until our plans changed unexpectedly that we felt the hospitality. We booked one night and the next two were to be spent sleeping under the stars at Playa Blanca. However, one in our party became ill the first night on the beach and forced us to return to Cartagena. Now even though they were booked solid they found a spot for us. The location is excellent, from there to the airport was 8,000COP and takes about 15mins. The hospitality we received from Sarah was world-class, after many long walks around the hot city she was always there with a smile and a cool drink in hand.

Relaxing stay
For being a hostel, I really enjoyed my stay. The ambiance was great and the staff was fantastic. Sarah, one of the hosts, was always there with a smile and willing to help us out. The whole scene there was relaxed and provided the necessary accommodations. There was a kitchen, TV, wifi, AC at night, three bathrooms to share with the rest of the house. Kind of the trickiest part but worked out. I like to call it an hipster's abode with hammocks.

This hostel is a good find. Good price for its good quality. The Location Makako Chillout Hostel is located in the old walled city of Cartagena. It is close to little shops, market, and the actual city wall. Restaurants and bars are within a five minute walking distance. Although it may look like its close to a beach, it's not. To get to an actual swimming beach, you will have to walk for half an hour or take a cab for $5000 Colombian peso which is only around $2.50. Besides that, the location is perfect for sight seeing and having fun. Rooms and Bathrooms The rooms are clean and air conditioned at night time. The 6 person bedroom that we stayed at was small but sufficient. There is a closet to put non valuables in and a small locker area near the reception desk for valuables. There is also a 10 person dorm room and a private room option. The bathrooms are clean, but the water flow is weak and there are no hangers or hooks to put your clothes on. Common Spaces There is a large common area with a balcony. In there is a large screen t.v and a few couches around it. The couches smell like sweat and if the air conditioner is not on, it' gets very hot. The are limited fans that you can use. Other than the t.v, there are no entertainment stuff in this hostel. You will need to get out of there for fun. There is only one computer and wifi is not the greatest when you are in your room. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, it doesn't really get too rowdy because people go out a lot. The kitchen doesn't have a lot of stuff in it, you are better off to eat outside. Summary Overall, I had a nice time in this hostel. The staff were extremely friendly and they know how to speak English. For the price we paid, it was was well worth it. I will come to this hostel again for its great location and chilled out atmosphere.
