It's a Small World Backpackers Lodge Avondale Reviews

Prostitutes, Dirty Kitchen, No Receptionist, BedBugs

I really struggle to find anything positive to say about this place ... Please, rather find a decent backpackers in Harare. Small world lodge must have been great in its former days before the new owner took over because it is a total dump now. Horrible! Dirty, rough, overcrowded and nasty ... unless you are into commercial laddies of the night. The energy of the small world lodge is rank! I would recommend any traveler to find another backpackers hostel in harare!

It's a Small World Backpackers Lodge Avondale is a long-standing hostel in Harare, Zimbabwe. The hostel has a number of amenities including a small, gated parking lot, as well as wireless internet for a small price. There is also a self-catering kitchen for those that would prefer to cook for themselves, and for everyone else there is an on-site restaurant.

The Location

The hostel is located in the Avondale neighborhood, just a couple of kilometers outside of the city center in Harare. Within ten minutes' walking distance from the hostel, you can find a few different ATMs, restaurants, and grocery stores. Like the rest of the neighborhood, the hostel is walled in with a gate and a guard. There aren't many signs to help direct guests to the hostel, so unless you're taking a taxi you might have to use a map or directions to get to the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The owners of the hostel have renovated the garage of the home into a dorm room, which now sleeps ten-plus people. The room is a bit dark, but it's comfortable enough as long as it isn't completely full. The hostel also offers private rooms and a few patches of grass for campers to pitch their tents. It is possible that overlanders could sleep here but their parking lot is quite small, so if you want to open up a roof tent, there is a chance there might not be enough space. As for the bathrooms, there are a few scattered around the hostel -- all are clean and with a good hot water supply.

Common Spaces

At one edge of the hostel, there is a pool in a garden setting with a number of chairs and couches for lounging. In the center of the complex there is an outdoor patio area with a number of tables and chairs that are adjacent to the bar. Inside there is also a seating area for the restaurant that extends into the bar. As for the self-catering kitchen, it is cleaner than average, although the refrigerators tend to fill up quickly with various food items. The hostel has a social vibe, since the common areas aren't many, but it is still easy enough to find a quiet space to yourself.

It's a Small World Backpackers is a good hostel to choose if you're visiting Harare. It has everything you need either in the hostel or within walking distance, and the city center is a short taxi drive away.

Generally good

I have stayed at this hostel four times and my stay was quite pleasant. There is internet connection in the main lounge and the garden. Sometimes it went down but mostly it was working. The bar always has cool drinks. Its a nice place to meet people from other continents such as Asia, Europe and Australia.

Could have been better

We were here in April of 2007. It was pretty pricey for the level of accommodation and we didn't have any hot water for the two days we spent here. Also, because we arrived somewhat late, they couldn't change any money and the kitchen was closed. We were forced to go hungry the first night. If you stay here be sure to arrive early or with enough cash for a meal at a local restaurant. The place was clean enough and the staff was as helpful as they could be given the circumstances. I'd probably check out another place before I stay here again.

This hostel felt like home. Oh no, actually, it WAS our home for four months. And we loved every bit of it. Darlington, Precious and Naomi made our stay one to remember.

We even had a farewell "braai" the day before we left. We'll be back, definitely!

Very helpful friendly, very near town centre, and the Avondale shopping. Good place and a safe place to stay in Harare.

Clean, secure, kind staff, nice guests.
