1849 Backpackers Albany Reviews

1849 Backpackers at the London Hotel is ideally located within walking distance to the main town of Albany, and right across the road from a fresh fruit farmers market held every Sunday.

The Location

There is space at the front of the hostel to park a few cars. It is quite easy to find as it is just a few minutes' walk from the main street. Although Albany is a great place to visit, if you have your own means of transport to see the sights and tourist attractions will make your time here a lot more enjoyable.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms here are very spacious with big windows and high ceilings. They have dorms as well as private rooms, which are kept to a high standard with clean linen and comfy beds. The bathrooms are regularly cleaned, there is plenty of showers and adequate shelving and shower hooks to keep your clothes dry. They even have a bath in the bathrooms which is quite a rare luxury in hostels!

Common Spaces

There are plenty of chill-out areas here -- benches in the kitchen and out in front of the hostel, and couches in the common room. The atmosphere is very relaxed and, although the hostel has quite a few rooms, it never feels over crowded. The kitchen is quite small but very well organised so they have made the most of what little space they have. The cooking utensils as well as cups, plates, cutlery are all provided and free to use without a deposit as in many other hostels.

The hostel has its many highlights and although it is hard to find a negative, the one glaring downfall of 1849 is the cafe situated on the lower level of the building. On weekend nights the music blaring below makes it very hard to sleep, as you can almost feel the vibrations of the speakers as you lie in bed. Although the music does stop shortly after midnight and the owners of the hostel are currently petitioning to put a stop to it, it is a real inconvenience if you need a good nights sleep.

Apart from that the hostel can not be faulted. The staff are very friendly and helpful in providing information about things to do in Albany, and you can feel a sense of welcoming on arrival. It is well run and kept very clean and tidy. Also, they hold a free barbecue for customers every week, which can come in very handy for the cash-strapped backpacker!

1849 Backpackers Albany Reviews from the Web

We could smell the hostel before we could see it, there was a group of about 5 crackheads outside smoking with their children throwing a football over our heads as we walked in. There was a dog running around the kitchen which was also confused as a play area for children who where bouncing their ball off the walls.

We booked through hostel world with a confirmation but the hostel receiptionist wasn't convinced and accused me of not paying for it.

2nd Time staying here. The place is so much better now.Not many long term riff raff anymore.

Very clean now but a little bit quite.

Welcoming and friendly hostel with a wide range of ages and kinds of people staying there. The staff are helpful and the location is very convenient in Albany, right by the main strip. Little touches like a power board by the beds in the twin-share private room were very welcome.

Mark and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. The room was very clean and the free pancake breakfast is amazing!

The room was clean enough and had a lock on the door however the rest of the building was very average. Dim lighting and not very clean in the kitchen area. The people staying/living there gave off a very unaccommodating vibe.

Get rid of the druggies tweakers staying there and with a remodel this would be an excellent place.

Run down place. I think there were less than 5 Backpackers. rest were people on their 40 to 60ties who would otherwise be homeless. people smoking everywhere, coughing because they are old and sick. people sitting next to you making weird noises like moaning. doors to dorms can be opened without a key. no security at all. place is run by bogans and that's the atmosphere. NOT a Backpackers place anymore. worst hostel ever and 31 bucks for a 6 bedroom? Man that is way too overpriced

Due to covid & shortage of accommodation

This hostel is for the majority occupied by semi permanent persons or those in transition. Dogs allowed in rm

It is more like a boarding house.

Lots of smoking & drinking

Very underwhelming & nothing like it was a few years ago

My individual room was clean. But the entire premises was run down, untidy & needed deep clean & maintenance .

No smoking area / zones not adhered to

Definitely would not stay

The owner was very nice.Great location and fairly sociable. There are a few long term Aussies there who should probably have their own section.

Liked: I really like the bedroom and underground room for tabletennis and music. Didn't like: Nothing till now

Very friendly staff and great showers.

I really liked this place, the staff is really friendly ! Like everyone I enjoyied the morning pancakes ;) I stayied in a female 6 beds dorm; the room was clean and the bed comfortable. The kitchen was also clean and well equiped. I really liked the atmosphere, it was really cosy and relax. Another good thing is the free wi-fi ! Not too far from the Transwa bus stop (less than 5 minutes walk). I would definetly recommand this hostel and stay longer !

Liked: Great location and very friendly staff, all the facilities you need and more. Didn't like: Nothing

Liked: Very nice family run hostel, very clean and roomy. Arrived late at night eager to watch a rugby match on tv and the lady was very nice and showed me to the loungewhere they have a wide screen tv and all the channels, it was a great first night even tho our team lost. In the morning the man cooks free pancakes for anyone who wants them and there's free tea and coffee! I've nothing to complain about perfect place to stay Didn't like: Nothing

Liked: This is the best hostel I have ever stayed at by far. The staff, the people staying there, the dog were all very friendly and accommodating. I could only stay for 3 nights, but wanted to stay for 3 months. The people here make it very comfortable, very family like. The location is good, right in the center of the old downtown too, so good for walking Didn't like: The very long hallway (minor problem)
