Amongst the best hostel I've stayed in in Australia, if not the best. Very quiet when we were there -- but that's just what we needed after partying in Cairns over Xmas. The hostel does a great, cheap, BBQ; rooms are spacious and clean; bathroom facilities plentiful and clean; great kitchen and lounge areas.
the tidiest hostel i've ever been to! if you want to get away to the tablelands this lodge is comfy and relaxing. there's no TV though, so if you don't go on their tours you have to make your own fun.
Really nice hostel in a place you never thought to find something like this! BBQ is a bit mingy but o.k. Try to get the Platypus-spotting or try the Platypus-spotting-form at the entrance to Yungaburra. This is a really nice hostel, try it!
If anyone wants a fantastic, cheap, fun and exciting hostel in the Table Lands then look no further than On The Wallaby!!
This may be my favorite hostel of all time! The staff were sassy and fun, not to mention helpful and very welcoming. I felt really comfortable in this hostel. (The rooms were clean and really comfy, and the beds came made with nice thick blankets!). And I wish I could have stayed longer. Free platypus sightings!!! Night canoe trips!!! Can it get any better?!
At the Wallaby Backpackers Lodge they create a special atmosphere with the open area on the ground floor where gas cooking facilities, a sink, cupboards, reception, chill-out-area, showers, toilets, and laundry. All of these things are very close together and seperated only by small walls. This place gives you a cosy feeling. It's tidy as well and you sleep good and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped, with really all you need to cook your meal.
The reception offers many brochures of places and events in the Tablelands and even if you come along when it's closed they will help you. Extraordinary is the Platypus spotting they offer everyday on dusk and dawn for free. With a small bus you travel to a near waterhole where you can see them coming to the surface.
They also offer public phones, a weekly BBQ for $6, a camping ground, and a rafting tour (for a fee).
It's difficult to find aspects of this hostel to criticize. This is truely a nice place, even on rainy days.
Nice, cozy little hostel with a really well equipped kitchen and homely atmosphere. This is a good little place to stay for a few nights. The free platypus spotting was good, but we were unfortunate to see only one as sometimes there are many more.
I stayed at the 'On the Wallaby' Hostel for only a few days, but I can say that I wish I had stayed for longer!! I had an awesome time staying in the hostel. It felt more like a home!!! Rock on, guys!!!!!
Excellent experience except my room is right next to the kitchen.
Such a good atmosphere here!! Really loved it. Building is open all night, no locks on rooms or lockers inside but everyone felt trustworthy. I wish the reception had more consistent hours. I struggled to check in because no one was there. Kitchen and other facilities were excellent (oven!!) And it was in the heart of Yungaburra (the nicest town in the Tablelands).
WellThis hostel is truly amazing!!! A fantastic experience as soon as you walk through the door. The staff were brilliant, knowledgeable and really helpful with giving information on the local area and sights to visit. Facilities and dorm room excellent! It gives you a true experience of the tablelands and countryside. You definitely dont want to skip this on your east coast trip! Would come back without a doubt! Thanks to everyone for making my trip enjoyable!!!
Such a great place to stay! For a couple in their late 20s/ early 30s it was perfect for a weekend get a way and honestly one the cleanest hostels Ive ever stayed at!
Just wish the night canoe tour was on and someone was around to give suggestions.
Honestly one of the most homey hostels Ive ever stayed in. Beautiful facilities and so very nice to stay in a hostel genuinely committed to being environmentally friendly. Lovely vibe, friendly and relaxed staff, beautiful facilities all set amongst the beauty of the Atherton Tablelands.
Liked: The hostel is very cosy and feels like a home away from the home. Nice out door area, very good kitchen and the staff were super helpful! Didn't like: nothing.
Liked: We stayed over here for a night inbetween visiting waterfalls. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with a happy smile and felt at home as soon as we walked in. The lady on the desk really looked afterU.S. And seemed genuinely interested in our travels. We were lucky enough to have the hostel to ourselves as we were the only ones booked in! Facilities are five star and everything is clean and well organised. The next morning a guy who worked at the hostel recommended a few hidden gems to stop off and see! Probably one of the best stays since arriving in Oz. Thanks guys, Michelle and Daniel - London UK Didn't like: Nothing
Liked: Friendly staff, home away from home. Lots of local knowledge. Didn't like: Kitchen can be a crowded if more than one person requires cooking facilities. May have to wait your turn to cook dinner.Keyless hostel. A relatively safe place, though I locked my handbag in the car, as one's room can be accessed by others in the hostel or people off the street. Placed my suitcase against the bedroom door at night.
Liked: Beautiful, clean, warm rooms in a perfect location -- Yungaburra's adorable, and there are a bunch of platypuses swimming in the nearby river. The staff are really super-friendly, they seem to organize really great tours and have good food options. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering going to the Tablelands!!! Didn't like: It's a keyless lodge, which made me really concerned about the security of my stuff, but otherwise was a *fantastic* place!
Liked: The decoration Didn't like: Activities were not well presented leading to misconceptions. The hostess was less informative than anyone else in town and not eager to help.
Liked: Atmosphere really relaxing (no party hostel). Nice rooms and facilities, safe and the night canoeing was amazing! Thanks for a great stay! Didn't like: n/a
Liked: Great staff! Good tour offers Didn't like: U can use the kitchen not every time! Power
Really friendly hostel in the perfect location for the Tablelands. Arrived in the early evening and although we didn't choose to have the bbq after watching it being cooked I would next time! Booked on to the night canoeing and saw Tree Kangaroos and more! Given lots of tips by the staff even those on their day off and saw platypus in the morning. All clean and everything there you need for a great stay.
Liked: Very nice atmosphere, friendly, good staff, awesome location Didn't like: Nothing
Liked: Friendly staff, clean, good facilities Didn't like: No power points in our room
