Big Hostel Reviews

Twice I saw a cockroach, once in the bedroom and once while eating so it didn't feel very clean. Location was close to everything though.

Great hostel, very clean and nice atmosphere!!

I can really recommend this hostel, as it is very clean and you dont feel anonymous there. The staff is so friendly they always help you with everything you need, especially the Manager helen. She was so nice and helped me finding a job. You get breakfast for free just as wifi. Its not a party hostel, quiet and for every age group. There are also some long-termers here that makes the atmosphere very familiar. I really enjoyed the stay here -- it's my favourite hostel in sydney!

Big Hostel is not a party hostel, but it is a place where you will meet tons of people from everywhere of every age. Free Wi-Fi is fantastic -- we never had a problem with the connection, even in the rooms. They offer free coffee and tea all day long. Free breakfast is basic (jams, peanut butter, toast, cereal) but it is pretty good. It is staffed by stay and work people from around the world -- they are all very nice and helpful. There is a layout of sunscreens you can choose from and use for free!

The Location

The location is perfect! Honestly, it is right down the street from Central Station. Very easy to find coming into the city (an eight-minute walk from Central Station) and it is easy to walk downtown from here (it takes forty-five minutes to get to the Opera House). As it's located within the CBD, it is perfect to get anywhere -- take a bus to Bondi, a train to Newton, or just walk everywhere. Staying here certainly can lessen the amount you need on Opal cards -- Sydney is a very walkable city.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are pretty standard dorm rooms. The lockers, which are in the rooms, are extra large, which will fit the largest backpack as well as daybag. The mixed-dorm floor has mostly guys staying there (first floor), and so while the washroom is mixed, it is generally in a state typical of men -- not very clean. Now the hostel has no control over what people do, but the guys' floor could use a more rigorous cleaning schedule. The washrooms are pretty standard with one room with three shower stalls and three toilet stalls.

Common Spaces

The kitchen, lounge, and dining room is one big space with the kitchen off to the side. There are strict rules on doing your own dishes, washing, and drying, so the kitchen is generally quite clean for a hostel. The staff do a very good job in cleaning as well as everything is wiped down twice a day. The dining space can be a little crowded, as they are the only tables in the hostel so there are times with a few people with computers hanging there. It never seemed to be a problem to find a place to sit though so don't worry about it. There is a small lounge seat and a single free-use computer just out side of the lounge/kitchen area so you can Skype from a separate and comfortable spot.

Overall, this is a great hostel. It is fairly expensive but you get what you pay for. Also, we never saw cockroaches and no personal bedding is allowed in order to keep the hostel bedbug free.

Ok hostel in good location.

Hostel was alright, free breakfast, good location near Central Station, clean bathrooms, lockers in rooms. However, the beds don't have reading lights and were a bit squeaky. Be careful to wash your dishes because if you don't they take away your $20 deposit.

Friendly stuff at great location

The staff was very friendly. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. Free breakfast, free internet. The only unpleasant thing is just that there are a lot of warnings about cleaning your dishes hanging around. But maybe this is the only way to keep the place clean.

Nice cosy hostel with really friendly staff

Had a private room to myself with an ensuite, comfy double bed, good hot shower. The hostel has a nice friendly feel, communal area and kitchen facilities were fine, appreciated the included breakfast and free wifi. The staff were really cheery which was one of the best things. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have a proper window in my room.

Excellent price, great quality

You can't beat their price. Free breakfast (jam sandwiches and milk) and internet (in the common area) are definite pluses! The rooms were what you'd expect, functional and clean. The staff was friendly, and the other guests were mostly young people.

The woman at the check in wasn't friendly at all -- when she saw that we were living in NSW, she proceeded to question us about why we were using a backpackers and commented that it was "weird." When we asked whether there were other backpacker hostels nearby, she told us to make up our minds whether we definitely wanted to book a room or not because if not, she didn't want to bother seeing if there was availability! The en-suite double room itself was ok -- the bathroom was new and the best feature in the room. Everything else was relatively clean. The room could have done with a chair or two!

Good location, bathrooms werent too

clean and wasnt a great environment.

Quite a few long term residents who are working in Sydney, so probably not ideal for backpackers. Very close to train station so good transport links. Pretty clean but not enough cutlery so might be good to bring your own.

Staff were welcoming. Checked in, walked into my room, then walked/checked straight out. Was not satisfied with what I paid for.

Had a comfortable stay. Couldnt find many places in Sydney that were cheap and didnt have complaints of cockroaches. Happy to say I didnt see anything. The bathroom, however, was pretty grim with a whole floor sharing 3 toilets. They could definitely do with more regular cleaning. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the location was a short walk away from the centre and close to a few train stations. Not much of an atmosphere and a lot of long term residents so not great for backpackers.

Some friendly stuff, toilets dirty most of the time. The kitchen was always full, difficult to cook. Good location.

Nice vibe, nice people, pretty social. Facilities were pretty good, there was one cockroach in our room but it wasn't the worst lol hopefully they solve the problem soon.

It is worth a stay.

I stayed for one month in this place, my first time at hostel, and not could be better, the location is perfect, very good staff, the kitchen and social area very nice too, I had a amazing experience!!

Good, solid hostel. Room and lockers are big and easily lockable. Location and staff were also good. Was only here overnight so didn't et a chance to check out the kitchen and other facilities but seemed OK. Will be great when the free breakfast starts again. Main criticism would just be the bathroom which was in need of maintenance and a good clean.

Big Hostel was in a good location in the city, walking distance to Chinatown and Surry Hills.

Room was fairly good sized and totally fine.

Staff was friendly enough, however it is anti-social, with no events or built in socialization as found in any good hostel.

Cleanliness was rough, the entrance room and common room both had a strong smell of stale sweat. The kitchen was unfathomably dirty, overflowing with old food bags, rotting food smell from the fridge, dishes in all the sinks

Staff were lovely! Great location for going anywhere! We had a lovely time in our first accommodation after arriving in Sydney from Scotland! Would definitely recommend!

My partner and I took the private room with the ensuite. The rooms are very clean and secure. Although the room is a bit bare, it has a great A/C system but no mini fridge / amenities offered as other hostels do for less $ per night.

If you are staying in a dorm tho, this hostel is a must to try. Very well maintained, great big kitchen area, rooftop is lovely and the location is perfect for the CBD. Staffs are very nice as well and quite helpful.

Centrally located within easy walking distance from Central station and Hyde Park / centre of Sydney. The facilities are adequate for the price you pay. I stayed in a single room with double bed and small bathroom. The bed was comfortable, but there was quite a bit of noise from the corridor, such as slamming doors. I chose the Big hostel as I had to catch a train early in the morning.

The mezzanine is noisy and the room is cold, the heater would not turn on. Couldn't turn on the TV either.

*average facilities - toilet leaking significant amounts of water

*fabulous staff

*very unclean - dishes everywhere, water all over bathroom floor

*excellent location

Staff smashed it out of the park! Best sleep we have had all trip. Thanks

I've stayed at all the hostels around CBD and keep coming back to this one. Great location near Central and Surry Hills. Very friendly and welcoming. Good prices.

Really good Hostel, great combination of a good location, friendly staff, good level of cleanliness and a reasonable price. Would recommend to any backpacker wanting to stay in Sydney.

Loved my stay ! Very clean, comfortable and friendly. Great location.

This was my first pod in Australia and I stayed here 7 days. It was perfect for the purpose. Super friendly and helpful stuff, great location to start exploring different neighbourhoods and look for permant accommodation. Stayed in a private en-suite and it was very comfortable, good value for money
