Chengdu Lazy Bones Backpackers Boutique Hostel

The Review

Don't let the silly name turn you away -- Chengdu Lazy Bones Backpackers Boutique Hostel is an excellent hostel and you are sure to have so much fun staying here! From the convenient location and super friendly staff to the great parties and tours, there is plenty to keep you busy and entertained at the hostel. It seems to attract a great variety of younger local tourists as well as international backpackers and a few middle-aged travelers as well. The staff are happy to write out words and phrases you would need for the taxi driver, to get you to the airport shuttle, or just to help you order food. They are also able to organize tours and transportation to various places. The panda reserve tour is highly recommended; the cheerful tour guide walks really quickly, but if you can keep up you will get the best views of the pandas before all the tourists crowd in. The Sichuan opera is also an entertaining way to spend an evening.

The Location

The hostel is located very conveniently across the street from the Line 1 Luomashi metro station (exit A); simply exit, cross to the other side of the street (not the intersection) and walk to your right for one minute (metro exit behind you). The bus stop to the west bus station is also a two-minute walk away. Tianfu square and the Mao statue are a ten-minute walk away and a great place to see traffic and people zipping around town. Other main attractions such as People's Park, Wenshu Monastery, and Jinli are easily accessibly by metro and bus, be careful not to underestimate walking distances.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are spacious and comfortable with great mattresses, air conditioning, ensuite bathrooms, a reading lamp and curtain for each bed, as well as safety lockers. You will notice the staff cleaning constantly throughout the hostel so there is no question of cleanliness. The bathrooms are clean, but since they are ensuite it will just depend on your roommates.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a very friendly common area that is constantly full of travelers to meet and talk to. When you arrive at the hostel for the first time, you will get a free big beer, tea, or coffee so it's a great way to start enjoying the atmosphere. The hostel also hosts a dumpling-making party once a week, and walking and biking tours of the city which are great ways to meet other people. There is a cafe and bar in the common area as well as a pool table, Wi-Fi, a TV, and a collection of books and tour guides. If you hang out in the common area for long, you will no doubt meet some great people with which to spend the evening chatting or the day exploring the city.

Chengdu Lazy Bones will no doubt be one of your favorites while traveling in China. It's a great place to relax and meet other travelers, get all your questions about China answered by the helpful staff, enjoy the culture, and sleep well in the comfortable clean beds. Word travels fast, though, so book your room ahead of time.

Great and helpful staff, good food, shabby room
My girlfriend and I stayed here 3 nights. We booked a room in another hostel, but ended up here instead. That hostel apparently does not offer private rooms, even though they say that they do! If you book a room in that hostel you will automatically get placed in Lazybones, which is their sister hostel. We got an airport pickup for 50 rmb, which is quite a reasonable price. The staff was friendly and very helpful. They speak fairly good English and are willing to help you out. It is possible to order breakfast, but the choices are limited. The hostel offers various tours. We took the panda research center tour and got there just to catch them during feeding time. The room in the hostel was, on the other hand, mildly put pretty shabby. The furniture was old, the carpet seemed dirty, and the room had a funny odour. There were wierd noises coming from the bathroom, we had a cockroach on the nightstand and a mouse or maybe even something bigger ran under our feet in the cafeteria.
