Blenheim Backpackers is a cheap, basic hostel outside of Blenheim. It has wireless internet access that is not free. The hostel has laundry facilities. Most rooms are at the back, so it is somehow safe for bikes.
It is located outside of Blenheim's town centre, at the town surroundings, next to the road going from Picton to Blenheim. The hostel is adjacent to the train line, so trains can be often heard even if you are inside the room. There are no supermarkets near the area unless you walk to the town centre. Blenheim has a wide range of accommodation options.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms at Blenheim Backpackers are usually clean, although the cleaners sometimes forget some spots. They have dorm rooms, twins, and double rooms. Most rooms are in cabins, and the place actually reminds you of a camping place. Double rooms have a wardrobe, a fridge, a small table, and some plates and cutlery. Floors are carpeted, with curtains on the glass door, with plenty of natural light in the room.
Bathrooms are standard, camping-ground toilets and showers, distributed in cubicles and divided by men and women in two separate rooms. Showering time is limited to five minutes, and after that you need to wait. Toilets and showers are not very clean. Sinks are standard metal sinks, and there is not much space to pass as there is a shower cubicle just in front of the sinks. There is a wide mirror on the wall.
The hostel indoor common spaces are not very good. The lounge is just a square tent with two public computers for internet access, and two old, wobbly tables with chairs. One of the tables has books on it, so it is supposed to work as a bookshelf.
The kitchen is not very clean and it has no plates or cutlery, as most rooms have their own included. There is an important lack of cooking utensils. There is no microwave, but it has an oven and four cooking stoves. There is only one small sink for washing dishes, but it is usually full of dirty dishes. In the middle of the room, it has a dining table with chairs, and a fridge.
The common spaces would get a very poor rating if it weren't for their swimming pool and picnic and barbecue area, with several wooden tables and benches.
This is a cheap, very basic hostel, which is not very close to the town centre. It would be a very quiet place if it wasn't for the train line next to it.
