The Dreamer Hostel offers a great stay whilst in Santa Marta. Though it's outside the historical center, this hostel has excellent facilities and is the gateway to activities outside of Santa Marta, such as Tayrona National Park.
The Location
The hostel is located in the suburbs of Santa Marta, only a five-minute cab ride away from the transport terminal. Whilst downtown Santa Marta may take slightly longer to get to via cab/bus (fifteen minutes), The Dreamer Hostel is located closer toward Tayrona National Park, which makes it well placed toward the more-visited tourist attractions nearby.
There is a large mall within walking distance (five minutes), so you can pick up food from a supermarket, and the mall even has fast-food outlets and a cinema as well as all the major Colombian banks and ATMs.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a mixture of dorms with fans, air-conditioned dorms, and private rooms. The dorm beds have decent mattresses, but the bed is a bit flimsy to climb, meaning it can shake when other people are getting into the upper or lower bunk. The rooms are quite clean and tidy and all rooms have lockers that you can use if you supply your own lock. The air conditioning is controlled by the staff, so it is turned on and off at certain times. The fan rooms only have ceiling fans, which is ok for those on the top bunk; those on lower bunks tend not to get the circulation of the air as much, which could make for an uncomfortable night's sleep.
The bathrooms are separated into male and female bathrooms and have two cold showers for use. They are cleaned regularly, and whilst it might not seem enough, there is never a queue to use the shower or toilets.
Common Spaces
All the rooms face a central courtyard that features a swimming pool, bar, and chill-out area. There is also a restaurant which provides food for reasonable prices and there is a kitchen upstairs for those who wish to cook themselves. Free coffee and tea is provided throughout the day.
The bar provides a great space to socialise and has a free pool table for use. The hostel puts on activities and is certainly a fun place to be. However as the bar is open until midnight and plays loud music, it isn't easy to get to sleep before then if you are a light sleeper.
The only downside about the common space is that the Wi-Fi is slow and only available here. There were many times when Wi-Fi was unusable in the evening, perhaps due to many guests using the internet at the same time.
Summary
The Dreamer Hostel is a great space that has everything you need. In fact, it's easy to not even leave the hostel some days, due to everything supplied in the hostel. Whilst it does make a great base for Santa Marta, it is not close to the historical centre, meaning you have to rely more on the hostel. However, it's a great environment to meet people and is constantly full of backpackers.

• The bus stop to the amazing Parque Tayrona is accross the street and very cheap pubblic transport to Quebrada Valencia, Minca, Rodadero and Taganga are just 2 blocks away from the hostel.
