Bad experience.
Do not stay here. We just arrived after the 8 hour trip Berlin-Köln to what appears to be a really nice part of the city. Booked two bed in a 8 bed dorm with bathroom for 17 euros each, which is pretty good for a late check-in in europe. The staff wasn't too joyful to see us, to say the least, but that would be acceptable for a late check-in in Germany. All in all, the huge "hostel-hotel", mostly designed for 16yo on field trips, is ok. The internet is horrendously slow, but that is unfortunately to be expected. In the dormitories you will be sleeping on an mattress as old as humanly possible, barely thick enough to not feel the cold metal bars holding it. To be honest you would be better off sleeping on the floor if only it was remotely clean looking. Try to not think too much about it, pop some pills you kept for that long ride tomorrow and you shall be all right till the teenagers wake you up with their screech. That would be not counting the horrendous smell that the rooms hold. That sharp, poignant stench of an army of unwashed feet. Being a budget traveler for the last 6 years, hostels are like a second home to me. I have very rarely experienced this, a smell that can make you throw up your inner guts faster than a rotten dead body on the Ganges, in my room. Talking to reception was basically am gigantic loss of time and nerves. Pretty use to it apparently, both attendants kept repeating like a well learnt adage -- "It's smells bad because you live with 8 other people" (3 were in the room)," "You should have booked a single room and pay more," and the good old "This is not our problem." So used to it that they wouldn't do anything to ease the night for you, not a quick room cleaning, not an air cleaning product handed ... Nothing. Cheaper hostels around the same area will with certainty give you more value and service for your pennies.

A&O Köln Neumarkt is an extremely clean, well organized hostel. Although it’s not so centrally located, it’s easily accessible by public transport. However, there is nothing included in the price other than your stay. If you want anything other than that (and that means really anything) you have to pay extra. The building has been recently renovated and there are plenty of rooms available. The Location The hostel is not so close to the main attractions, but it’s still possible to walk if you have the disposition. It takes about thirty minutes walking to the cathedral, but public transport is plentiful and easily accessible. There are many supermarkets, drugstores, restaurants, and bars in the area. The corner where the hostel is located, however, is not too busy or loud at night. Parking is available in the basement, at a price. Rooms and Bathrooms There are single and double private bedrooms, and four- and six-bedroom mixed dorms with bunk beds. All bedrooms have a private shower and a separated toilet, which are very new and thoroughly clean. There are no lockers in the room, but the doors are only opened with a magnetic card. Bed sheets and towels are rented. Common Spaces The main common area is the large hostel lounge. It has computers for guest use (but not free internet), a bar with snacks and beer, a pool table, a space with a few armchairs, and a small kids area with toys and a tent. Breakfast is a nice and varied buffet served in a large salon in the basement, but it’s also an extra charge. The reception can be crowded, since you need to go there to pay for most services. There is no kitchen for guest use. Summary This place is quite new and spotless, and offers good service. Staff are helpful, but the atmosphere feels very impersonal and sober. It is important to consider that you are likely to spend more than the price of your stay, since there are many extra charges, but there is no question as to the quality of service. It’s not so much of a party place, but it’s possible to meet people and chill out. Location is not the best possible, but it’s in a nice area and public transport is widely available.
