Transit Backpackers

The Review

When you arrive at Transit Backpackers, you are greeted with friendly staff first off the mark. First impressions are good, and they hold up throughout your stay.

The Location

On arrival, we were told that the parking around the back if not for guests and is privately leased instead. Guests who wish to park must do so after 6 p.m., and should leave by 8 a.m. The staff do not man the desk until 8 a.m., so if you want to get your key deposit back and have parked you'll need to time it so that you can check out at 8 and take your car out then. Even if you wish to go for a drive before handing in your keys, you are unable to get your car out as the gate is locked overnight. This will only be an inconvenience for early risers and does provide some security for your car. For those using the bus, there are plenty of bus stops within walking distance and you can get around Hobart quite well without a car.

There is also a pub a couple of buildings down for those that like a night out, but we must say, we preferred that the pub isn't part of the backpacker accommodation, making it a much quieter stay even though its location is very central and it's easy to find.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are kept clean -- any mess is entirely due to untidy backpackers. There are twin, double, and share rooms of four to twenty beds available at reasonable rates; we stayed in a sixteen-bed room and the beds are as comfortable as you could expect, apart from the few ants trailing the walls and bunks. Whilst linen is supplied freely, you must fit this to your bed on arriving (it's not done for you). There is a charge for towels. There is no air conditioning in the bedrooms, as you might be expecting, so we would recommend making a beeline for the bunk nearest to the window, as the rooms do get very stuffy. There are locks on the dorm rooms but we found that most backpackers to do not take the time to lock the door when leaving.

We were pleasantly surprised to find the bathroom is kept very clean; the showers have enough room to get changed in private. There are hooks for your towel, but during our shower, the water seeped over to where my bag was sitting; we would have appreciated an additional hook or bench for our bag, to save it from getting wet.

Common Spaces

The recreation area has a TV where a few backpackers can be found with their feet up. The establishment supports a large dining area with plenty of table space, although unfortunately the tables and seats are quite unclean (covered with old food and stains). The kitchen looks older than it is (but is noticeably cleaner than the common room), and a lot of their appliances are getting rusty, but everything has its place and the hostel supplies all the basic utensils and cookware that you will need. There isn’t much happening socially in the recreation area, but they do have a pool table and some arcade games for those wanting to meet people or kill some time.

This hostel stands as an example of everything that you would expect from a good hostel. Its central location and the space to park your car for free might be a deciding factor for taking this hostel above any other. Their staff are genuinely welcoming and overall we had a pleasant stay.

Really nice
Really nice staff, clean rooms and a safe feeling.
Good to stay in 4 bed dorm
I have four nights spent here in a 4 bed dorm. For two nights, there is only we staying. That means I can use the whole room! Cool! It would be better to have more sinks and cleaner stuff in the kitchen.

Clinical with slot machines everywhere. Bad vibe.
The staff seemed to be running scared of the owner here, whose just a disconnected bogan trying to fleece guests at every angle. Kitchen inadequate with only 1 sink for over 100 guests, slot machines everywhere. Stupid rules that change with the wind, staff robotic. Not nice here.
