Mousebird Backpackers & Safaris CC is an interesting hostel located in the town of Tsumeb, less than a hundred kilometers away from Namibia's famed Etosha National Park. The hostel itself has more of a homey feeling than a backpackers vibe, but it pulls it off well. The place offers good, free Wi-Fi, and there are two kitchens available for self-catering.
The hostel is centrally located in a residential neighborhood that's full of trees and other vegetation, giving it a nice feel, considering the hostel is almost in the middle of town. It's location is just a short, ten-minute walk to most of the grocery stores, restaurants, and other shops in Tsumeb. Thanks to the large sign posted on the hostel's wall, it is not a difficult place to find provided you have a map that can put you on the street where the hostel is located.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms in the hostel are kept neat and tidy. The rooms are spotless, the beds are made up, and everything is kept clean. There are dorm rooms, as well as private rooms from which to choose. The bathrooms are fairly straightforward, and the hostel has gone the extra effort to provide the dorms with towels. The showers that are located just on the outside of the main building have an instant gas water heater, so there is no concern about running out of hot water! The hostel also has a yard big enough for overlanders to park their cars and campers to pitch their tents.
Unfortunately the hostel doesn't really have many good common spaces where backpackers can sit around and chat or share travel stories. There is a living room that has a few places to sit, but the room seems more like a storage unit for random furniture. The kitchens are kept clean, and unlike many places, the refrigerators are kept clean and have ample space. The yard is nice and big, and there is a small outdoor patio, but again, the hostel feels more like a home than a backpackers.
Mousebird Backpackers is a good hostel for the town of Tsumeb -- it isn't exactly known as a party town, and the hostel fits with the setting quite well. If you find yourself in Tsumeb, or simply leaving or heading to the Etosha National Park, Mousebird Backpackers is a good choice for a quiet place to stay.
