Hans Brinker Hostel Reviews

Hans Brinker Hostel Lisbon is a perfectly adequate hostel that is reasonably priced and has some strong features.

The Location

Its location is a short metro ride to the focal area of Lisbon that's closer to the Tagus River. Fortunately, it is near four metro stations (the closest takes five minutes to walk to). Though there are many local spots to visit, such as Marques de Pombal, Eduardo VII Park, and Garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and you can walk to the shopping centre and cinema in twenty minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

They have six floors having at least four rooms per floor, so it can hold many guests. They charge you a deposit for your room key -- make sure you return it before the deadline, else you'll lose that money. Four bunk beds in a room is a little cramped, though it does have a private bathroom with shower, which is a lovely feature, and as it's private it feels like a hotel bathroom (although this does mean you have to wait to use it at times). Each bed has a private plug socket and light, although our light didn't work. Each bunk bed has two large, lockable drawers that can take a small padlock. Lifts are unpredictable -- they sometimes work, and sometimes don’t. The lift doesn’t go to the top floor; while it's not a huge problem, it’s worth knowing.

Common Spaces

There is one large bar/dining room that leads to an even bigger outside area. This area has a BBQ, many benches, a large paddling pool, and a basic exercise machine. The dining area has a large TV, a foosball table, and uniquely lets its guests write on the walls. There's some artistic graffiti on there but most of it is quite bad. The free breakfast has a few food options -- rolls, jam, cheese slices, ham, muesli, cornflakes, coco pops, and tea and coffee. They have a grill that you can use to toast the rolls. They also have a happy hour between 6 and 7 p.m. every day. There is no kitchen that guests can use, which is a real negative, as you can't cook for yourself or keep food and drink in a fridge. A staff member did say that if you ask, they will let you keep some items in the private fridge.

Summary

The free breakfast, main dining/bar space, outside area, and private bathrooms are high points of this hostel. The shoddy lifts may mean you should try to get a room closer to the first floor, where the social area is. For the price as well, it's worth staying if you don't want to cook your own meals.
