The Garden District House

The Review

AAE Bourbon House Hostel is hospitable, friendly, and small enough to allow socializing. It is a good choice in terms of cleanliness and atmosphere; however, it is a little secluded from the busier areas.

The Location

The hostel is located within walking distance of the Garden District, and it is about a ten-minute walk from an airport shuttle drop-off point. It is also about ten minutes away from the St. Charles street streetcar. The hostel, while within walking distance of many busy streets, is in a residential area separated from Magazine Street by a series of vacant lots. If leaving or coming back to the hostel at night, it may be best to take a cab or travel in a group. We haven't noticed anything of concern during the day, but have avoided walking through the area at night.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are clean, and while they are not recently renovated or equipped with state-of-the-art air conditioners, we didn't have any issues with the way they were maintained. There are several bathrooms, all of them cleaned daily; however, some are in better shape than others. None of them has major problems though -- just maybe some cracked tiles or a leaky shower. The shower in the bathroom next to the common room has very low water pressure, but that may be just a temporary issue.

Common Spaces

There are two adjacent common spaces -- one inside and one outside. The main living room area has a TV and a computer with free internet access (in addition to free wW-Fi); with just five seats and many people passing through, it is not a good place to hang out for a long time. Most people who want to have a beer and chat (or maybe play some pool) sit outside at one of the several tables on the backyard deck. This is a good place to socialize. The kitchen is large enough to accommodate about five people at the same time, but it is well equipped enough that you can cook your own meals easily if needed. When we visited, there were free pancakes in the morning.

Overall, this is a nice and friendly hostel, and we don't have any complaints about it. The only issue may arise if you're traveling alone and wish to go out at night, but it should not deter you from staying there. The area itself if not unsafe, it may just be a little too quiet at night.

Very friendly and cozy hostel!
I went to New Orleans for the french quarter festival. The hostel location is pretty good. You can take street car or bus with 3~4 blocks away from the hostel. The hot cake for the breakfast is nice. If you prepare some fruits or cream cheese, it would be better. The pillows and blankets are clean and as well as the hostel. The most attractive points of the hostel is, I think, friendly staffs. Alan, Alle, and Ula are so kind and nice both at work time and at work-off time. If I have to go NO again, I will not hesitate to use this place again.

Nice neighbourhood
We stayed for 3 nights at the hostel. It is located in a very nice neighbourhood. Two blocks from Magazine street where there are lots of nice bars and good restaurants if you'd like to go out close at the hostel. If you'd like to go the centre, just take the bus 11 and you'll be there in 10 minutes. The hostel is OK, nice staff. Clean and at night quiet.
Fun, friendly, relaxed
I loved this hostel. stayed four nights, and needed another. i mean the city is fantastic, and there is so much to do and see. The manager reese is a hero, very cool, and was always willing to help. even with some of the more difficult guests he was always composed and was always courteous. Nice relaxed patio area, pancake breakfast, clean rooms, air conditioning, fully equipped kitchen, Cant recommend it enough. Go there and have fun.
