The Monk's Bunk

The Review

The Monk's Bunk is first and foremost a party hostel, which boasts amazing amenities in a good location with friendly staff. For the place to remain clean all day, you must take out your shoes before you enter the common spaces and to get to the reception desk.

The Location

The Monk's Bunk is perfectly located where the Old Town starts. It is about a twenty-minute walk to the international bus station and right next to buses and tram stops. However, once you are there, you really should do everything on foot, as the Old Town is very small and the surroundings don't offer much in the way of sightseeing.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are located on two levels -- the first and second floors of the building. The reception area and common spaces are on the second floor as well, so it is very noisy all night in the dorms on that floor. However you can get free earplugs at the reception desk. The doors don't lock but each bed gets a small locker and a key to it. There's no bed lamp, but there are plenty of plugs in the rooms. Linens and blankets are provided. Dorms are your basic eight to twelve bunk beds. It does get stuffy and smelly in the rooms. Also, if you don't plan to party a lot and go out, you might have problems falling and staying asleep.

The bathrooms are brand new and super clean. They are big and each has a toilet, huge rain shower, sink, and mirror. They also have plugs, but none of them work. There are only three bathrooms and one extra toilet for about thirty people on the second floor, so waiting occurs regularly, but no proper queuing.

Common Spaces

Common spaces are definitely the strong point of this hostel. The reception desk doubles as a bar, where you get a free check-in shot (and no disgusting Sambuca here). There is a pool table, a foosball table, and an air-hockey table! There are also several couches, two computers for use as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and a projector screen to watch cartoons in the morning and play music videos all evening. There is even a smoking room by the reception so people don't have to go out to smoke -- but the atmosphere of the common spaces remain smoke free. A large kitchen with two separate tables, fridges, and several amenities is available to guests. There is also a small reading room with a book exchange shelf, but it isn't very popular. The website mentions a sauna, but there is no sign of it anywhere.

Once again, this is a party hostel, so be prepared to party. Pub crawls organised by the hostel start at 9:30 p.m., five nights a week, at the hostel's very bar with a power hour. This means you get free beer and cider for an hour, talk to about a hundred other people that fit in the room, get a last free shot, and be on your way to Tallinn's best bars. You can pay to join the pub crawl -- you can book it whenever at reception.

Overall this is a very good and new hostel if you want to meet people, play, and party every night. Note that there is no elevator in the building, but there aren't too many stairs either. And you must pay a deposit to get a keycard to open the front door (make sure you've actually received it along with the key to your locker).

I miss Monk's sooo much!
Stayed here in October 2012, and any time I think of my stay there it makes me happy -- Monks was an awesome hostel! Brilliantly designed, having the reception/bar in the middle of the common room means you'll be chatting and making friends the minute you check in. Perfect for everyone -- those who want to chill can relax on the couches watching movies, those who like to party can drink at the bar, or go with Monks staff to trivia nites, pub crawls and Giant Jenga at sister hostel The Red Emperor. Best of both worlds. Whether you want to rock in blind drunk at 6am every nite or chill out playing chess or pool over a few quiet (and quite cheap) drinks at the bar, or both, Monks can offer it all. Plus comfy and clean beds, brilliant central location, Monks sets the standard for how all hostels should be. But what really sets it apart is the awesome, friendly and fun crew -- big thank you to everyone, but in particular Trivia Queen Morgan, the amazingly sweet n' cheerful Anna, and the super interesting glowstick maestro Dimitrius -- you guys Rock! If you're looking for a great place to stay in Tallinn do yourself a favour and give Monks a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Certainly good enough
Not the most impressive hostel I stayed at on this trip. It looked a little bit run down. Everyone who worked there was friendly and helpful. It's a few steps away from Old Tallinn, very conveniently, but close enough to major roads to always feel safe to walk to. In one word, Fine.
Fun, comfortable hostel
Well what can I say this hostel is excellent, it is in a good location very close to (though not in) the Old Town, near buses and shops. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy with good mattresses unlike some hostels. The showers are amazing- better than mine at home! There is a well equipped kitchen and a laundry service if needed for 3 euros a load (done by the staff). The main thing about this hostel is it prides itself on being a social place -- there is a bar in the common room where you can get a beer and plenty of sofas to relax on, the staff are backpackers themselves and know Tallinn well, they organize regular pub crawls with their sister hostels. I would definitely recommend this hostel.
