The Review

Nomads Auckland Backpackers is the best choice if you are looking for a fun, party hostel where you can meet other travelers.

The Location

When it comes to location, there is probably no better place to be than Nomads Auckland. The hostel is located in the city center, on a side street of the main street. It is easy to find, as you can see the big signs already from the main street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Nomads Auckland has everything from private rooms to twelve-bed dorms. The rooms are not very spacious, but there is enough room on the floor for a few backpacks. There are two big lockers under every bunk bed, and your backpack will fit here easily. You have to bring your own padlock. The beds are sturdy, but the mattresses are not very comfortable. There are more than enough plugs available in each room, so you’ll have no problem charging your electronics. Every bed comes with clean bed linen, and towels are for rent in the reception. The door to each floor and each room is locked with a key card.

Every floor has one big unisex bathroom. There are ample clean showers and toilets, so you won’t have to wait in the morning.

Common Spaces

The hostel has different common areas, located on different floors of the building. There is a TV room/lounge area located on the first floor. This is a good place for watching movies or using a computer (although the internet is not free). There is also a bar on the first floor, which serves drinks every evening. On the top floor, you’ll find the kitchen. It’s not really big for the size of the hostel and at dinner time, you might have to wait for a long time before you can cook. There is not a lot of fridge space and you’ll be lucky if you find a spot for your food. The rooftop terrace is a big plus, and even better -- it comes with a jacuzzi! There is also a sauna (for about four people, first come first served) and both are included in the price. Washing machines are available for a small fee.

Next door of the hostel is the MAD Travel Shop, which belongs to the Nomads Auckland Backpackers. They have a lounge area as well and they give you a hour of free internet every day.

This is a real party hostel. There are activities going on every day, either in their own bar or they’ll take you somewhere for a fun party. It is a great place to make new friends, but it is also a big hostel, which can make you feel a bit lost if you find it difficult to approach people yourself.

We ended up at Nomads Auckland Backpackers by accident and ended up with a good all around stay. The Location After being dropped off on Queens Street, we were walking to another hostel and mistook Nomads for the place we were heading. The front desk was helpful in getting our room, but not as helpful letting us know about the amenities. Rooms and Bathrooms We stayed in a six-bed room. They have rooms with eight and twelve beds, which are cheaper than the six-bed room, but since we had traveled all day and were tired we went for the one that would be a little quieter. We didn't have any problems with noise from the hostel with anyone partying in rooms, but a couple of people we were rooming with said there was a lot of noise the night before. There is construction on a building next to this hostel, so there is noise coming from that, but we didn't find that it was a big deal. Beds are clean and under the bed there are lockers. If you don't have a lock they sell them. Bathrooms are clean, with plenty of showers and toilets. Common Spaces They have two common rooms, but both were packed so we didn't really get a chance to use them. There is limited seating, and seating you may not want to sit on anyway. They have a computer center with about fifteen computers, which is great because they tend to get busy. You will need to buy a wireless card from the front desk. Summary Another great aspect of this hostel is they have a free meal every night from 7 to 8 -- the portions are small but for a little extra cash you can upgrade the meal and beer. Happy hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the bar and they give out fun prizes (tours). The kitchen doesn't seem all that clean, and around dinner time is packed, so it can be hard to use. There is a free tour around the city but you need to book early because everyone has the same idea.
