General Information About Cancun

Cancun is a relatively young city, founded in the 1970s to become Mexico’s most important touristic destination. Today, Cancun is home to almost 900,000 people and receives over 20 million tourists annually.

The average temperature in summer is 84°F, and the winters are mild, as low as 68°F. It’s no surprise Cancun receives visitors all year, although rains are frequent in late summer and fall, during the hurricane season, between June 1 and November 30. Hurricanes are not a problem every year.

Cancun is just an hour away from Playa del Carmen and minutes away by ferry from Isla Mujeres. Still, you can stay in the city and have a great time without moving around much.

Where to Stay in Cancun? The Neighborhoods

Cancun is a large city. The touristic area, or “Zona Turística,” also known as Cancun Island, stretches thin for 14 miles (ca. 23 km) between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagune. This is the best place to stay in Cancun, but it is also the most expensive area.

Downtown Cancun, a proper urban area, is less expensive and a short ride from the beaches along the tourist area. The farther you are from the coast, the fewer tourists you’ll see, so stay close to the coast for the best experience.

As for the food, Cancun is home to thousands of restaurants, from small eateries to high-end restaurants. The first is more frequent in Downtown Cancun, and the latter is expected in the tourist area.

How to Get to Cancun?

Cancun is a major tourist destination with a world-class International Airport, receiving dozens of flights from all corners of the earth. There’s a big chance you’ll arrive in Cancun on one of these flights, since most neighboring major cities are hours away.

  • Once at the airport, avoid the taxis and shuttles and head straight to the ADO Bus terminal — the cheapest and most efficient way to get to Downtown Cancun.
  • A shared shuttle might be best for you if you’re staying in the touristic zone.

Things To Know Before You Go

Cancun is a fabulous destination, but it’s still a big city with big city problems. Follow these tips to make the most of your trip.

  • Stay in the tourist area or Downtown Cancun and don’t venture into the neighborhoods far back.
  • Although exceptions exist, taxis will try to overcharge you, so know what a fair fare is.
  • Don’t drink on the street or on the beach. Although it is common in some areas, it is still illegal.
  • Ignore anyone trying to sell you illegal substances.
  • Food is incredibly inexpensive in Cancun if you know where to look. Eat local specialties in small eateries downtown instead of splurging in the tourist-oriented restaurants in the touristic zone.
