Monkey Mia is located on the Western Coast in the north of Western Australia, on a stretch of clean, white sandy beaches and a clear, blue ocean. The biggest attraction at Monkey Mia is the government-run dolphin center, which organizes daily educational talks on the marine life found off the coast of Western Australia, and daily interactive dolphin feedings of local bottleneck dolphins. The dolphin center and Monkey Mia is run and managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), which closely monitors procedures taking place at Monkey Mia to ensure only sustainable practices occur. The Department of Environment and Conservation also runs a volunteer program, where volunteers get to interact directly with the dolphins. There are also many snorkeling, diving, and sailing opportunities, most of which can be arranged from Monkey Mia, or the nearby towns.

All accommodation, including hostels in Monkey Mia, are required to meet strict government regulations, regarding sustainable development, the environment, and conservation. The Department of Environment and Conservation oversees that these regulations are met.
