Get to know Magdeburg (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Magdeburg.

Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt state in central Germany, situated on the Elbe River. With around two hundred and thirty thousand residents, it is the second-largest city in the state, right behind Halle. Nowadays Magdeburg is often overlooked, but it was once one of the most significant medieval cities in Europe. It has, in fact, well over a thousand years of rich history, which can still be felt today.

There are some good Magdeburg hostel options available close to the train station and they are a perfect starting point to explore the city -- not that moving around is any kind of a problem, though. Magdeburg offers solid bus and tram services that make moving around fast and pleasant. There is also a Magdeburg Tourist Card available, which entitles you to free rides with public transport, guided tours, and more for forty-eight hours. It is sold at Tourist Information for a reasonable price.

As far as the sights are concerned, there is quite a lot to see. The main attraction of the city is of course its famous Magdeburger Dom, which is the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany, and at more than one hundred metres, one of the tallest as well. Other must-see attractions are The Green Citadel building by the famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser; Waterway Junction with the longest canal bridge in Europe; Elbauenpark and its Jahrtausendturm; or the Millenium Tower, which is supposedly the third-highest wooden tower in the world. There are, of course, plenty of other places well worth visiting, as well as more than enough opportunities for shopping and eating out.
