Get to know New Delhi (no more

New Delhi is one of the largest cities in India and impresses with lots of temples, museums, and cultural activities. It is spread out vastly and it is pretty difficult to find your way if you are not a local. The choice of your hostel in New Delhi will largely contribute to how easy it will be for you to find the sight you want to visit.

The best place to look for a New Delhi hostel is around Connaught Place. It is a central location, taxis are always available and it is a fairly safe neighborhood. You will probably bump into lots of hostels in Karol Bagh; you should only choose to stay here if you need to be close to the railway station, otherwise it's not the nicest or safest neighborhood. The more upscale New Delhi hostels are way outside of the city center since this is safer and less polluted; but if you plan on doing lots of sightseeing it's less convenient.

After arriving at the airport, take a pre-paid taxi directly to your hostel (pre-booking is highly recommended). Do not let the driver convince you that your hostel does not exist, has burnt down etc. Getting around in New Delhi is a hassle since the public transport system is not very comprehensive and your only chance of getting where you want to go is to take a taxi or a motor-riksha. The latter is much cheaper but can be quite adventurous. Be aware that driver might try to take you to shopping malls where they get commission for bringing in tourists. The safest option is to have your receptionist order a taxi for you.

Try to visit New Delhi in winter since during summertime temperatures will be around 40 degrees. If you have extra time, take a fast train to Agra and visit the legendary Taj Mahal.
