Visit the historic town center and mingle around Turkish cafes smoking water pipe (hookah) or watch craftspeople. This city is particularly interesting for anyone interested in religion, with plenty of houses of worship to visit. You might head up the hills and stroll through cemeteries, with a shockingly beautiful view of town and on to the Yellow Fortress. When outside of town, do take seriously any signs about land mines.

Sarajevo hostels tend to be helpful both on your arrival and with giving directions through the often nameless streets. If you have a tight schedule, you might want to stay near town, as public transportation in Sarajevo (trams and buses) is slow and confusing. Taking the tram around town is a worthy experience -- just know you may wait a while or have a long walk to get back.
