Mildura, situated on the Murray River, is a hub for water sports. There is a small river beach located a few kilometers out of town or you can go for a cruise on the river on an authentic paddle steamer. The region's still weather (Mildura has a semi-arid climate with hot summers; winters can be cool, with frequent frost damaging the irrigated crops) also makes it ideal for hot-air ballooning and the annual Mildura International Balloon Fiesta attracts many visitors. For those who like nature, there are the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens in Mourquong, a short drive from Mildura, the Southern hemisphere's first semi-arid botanical gardens.
