City Lodge Reviews

City Lodge Stockholm gives a dull and depressing feel and should not be taken as a representation of Stockholm’s overall vibe. It is obviously a budget choice and not ideal for those travelers wishing to meet others and socialise. There is only one good thing about this hostel and that is the location, otherwise there are no other good things about this hostel unfortunately. Something else worth noting is that the reception is not open twenty-four hours a day and the linen is not included in the bed price.

The Location

The hostel’s location is the best thing about it -- it's only a short walk from the main bus station (five minutes) and close by to most modes of transport within the city. The neighbourhood is quite safe and usually pretty active all day round. The hostel itself is easily found and there are several restaurants/cafes close by. There is no parking available onsite. The Old Town and most of Stockholm’s main attractions are less than thirty minutes' walk, which is great as there is no need to spend money on public transport, which can be expensive.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are various-sized dorm rooms available at the hostel; the biggest is a mixed, twenty-eight-bed dormthat lacks windows and is set up with fourteen bunk beds. To get into the hostel, the front door has a code that changes each day, and once you are in the hostel, there is a separate code for the dormitory rooms. The twenty-eight-bed dorm is located on the same level as the reception, kitchen, and common area. Inside the twenty-eight-bed dorm, there are some lockers, but it's not enough for all of the beds (and no padlock is provided). There is a small kitchen through the back of the dorm room with two unisex showers and two unisex toilets. The beds are uncomfortable but each guest is provided with his or her own light and a shared powerpoint (four points per bunk) located at the head of the bottom bunk. The rooms are dingy and messy looking.

There is clutter in the "common spaces" near the toilets and showers. The toilets stink and the showers are constantly dripping, some of the showers are unable to change temperature, and the female-only bathroom (located downstairs) has no basin although there are toilets there. In the showers (and toilets) there are no hooks for hanging items, and the changing space is quite small within the shower. No soap is provided.

Common Spaces

There is one common space provided in the hostel. This joins with the kitchen, where there is a TV and several chairs, benches and tables. There are also some power points, which people can use while in the area. There is no outdoor seating provided and limited information about Stockholm is on offer at the reception. The kitchen is of reasonable size and there are two fridges (no freezers), a kettle, sink, two microwaves, and cutlery/plates for everyone to use. It is not a social place and feels quite dirty and dull. There are no hostel events on offer and the staff are sometimes helpful but usually avoid talking with guests.

Summary

This hostel is very much a budget hostel. It would be best to spend a little more and stay elsewhere with better vibe. The staff can be rude and unhelpful depending on the day. There is Wi-Fi but it only works in the reception area (sometimes) and there is no mobile phone signal in the dorm rooms at all. The people -- usually older people, mostly men -- who are staying in this hostel seem to be long term, working, or living in Stockholm, which makes the dorm rooms messy as they spread out. This hostel is uncomfortable to stay in and can jeopardise your impression of Stockholm.
