Enzo’s Backpackers’ is housed on the ninth floor of a building, although check-in is at the family’s apartment on the tenth floor, and guests will be happy to know that there is a working lift in the building!
The Location
Enzo’s is quite a way from central Havana. It’s easily a thirty-minute walk, although you can catch a bus or a shared taxi into either central Havana or Havana Vieja, the old city, from nearby. There is a plethora of shops and eateries around this area, and there is a Wi-Fi hot spot right across the road in the small park, where there is also an Etecsa kiosk selling internet cards.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are just two rooms in this neat little hostel -- a twin private and a six-bed dorm. The dorm beds are all fairly sturdy with metal bunks, and the mattresses are pretty comfortable. There are two fans and an air conditioning unit in the dorm. Each bed has access to a power point and there is also a charging point on the small table by the balcony with USB connections. The small balcony gives a view across Havana to the west and south and you can see El Capitolio in the center from here. There is a cupboard for backpack storage with small lockers for valuables; guests will need their own padlock for these. Both rooms share a bathroom, which is clean, and whenever there is water it is hot as there is a water heater in the dorm storage cupboard (sometimes the pressure is too low to get the water up to the ninth floor). There is also a toilet and hand basin in the bathroom.
Common Spaces
There is a small sitting room, which has a couch and comfy chairs, and there is a huge map of Cuba on the wall. Enzo has also provided an information point with maps of the immediate area, including places to eat; shops; exchange offices; banks; ATMs; and bus stops, route numbers, and destinations. A small kitchen sits in the corner of the sitting room with a microwave, kettle, and fridge. Enzo also provides free tea and sugar. Guests will also find a laundry sink in the corner of the kitchen and there is a washing line on the dorm balcony. There is a charging point in the sitting room with USB connections.
Summary
This is a lovely little backpackers’ hostel, run with loving care by the young owner and his parents for the past few years. It’s also one of the cheapest in the city. If you don’t mind being a bit away from the central action, this is an excellent choice. There are, however, plenty of transport options a short walk away to get you into town and out to the bus stations and airport. Entrance to the building may require a phone call up to the family as the downstairs door to the street is locked, or you might catch a resident on the way in or out. Entrance to the hostel apartment is via a locked gate and a front door. Keys to both of these, and the downstairs door to the building itself, are issued to each guest. The little extra touches like the info point and the free tea go a long way to making this a more homey place than many others in Havana. It’s very clean and the English-speaking family is always on hand with advice (should you require it).
