Flora Macdonald Hostel Reviews

Description

The Flora Macdonald Hostel stands in magnificent surroundings at Kilmore in the south end of the Isle of Skye, approximately two and a half miles north of the Armadale Ferry, on the A851. The area is the traditional home of the MacDonald clan of Sleat. Free transport is provided to and from the Armadale ferry.

The hostel has two dormitories sleeping 10, and three rooms which sleep 4. It has just recently been modernised, upgraded and reclassified, and has full central heating. It has a fully equipped kitchen with all accessories, a drying room with washing machine and tumble dryer, shower, toilets and washhand basin. There is a conservatory for relaxation, and a payphone and fax.

It is run by Peter MacDonald, Skye's Number One tour guide, who has two people carriers for conducting personalized tours of the island. He also breeds rare Eriskey Ponies and Black Highland Cattle.

Location and Contact

Location

• Kilmore can be reached from two directions. The Caledonian Mcbrayne ferry runs daily from Mallaig on the mainland to Armadale in Sleat. Kilmore is 2.5 miles north of Armadale on the A851. Visitors who arrive over the bridge to Skye should travel along the A87 until they reach the township of Skulamus. Then turn left on to the A851 southwards towards the Sleat peninsula. Guests may consider stopping in the town of Broadford to visit the local supermarket before continuing down the Sleat peninsula.
• The junction at Skulamus is well signposted to both Sleat and the Armadale Ferry. From the turn off at Skulamus the trip is about 10 miles. The most prominent landmark in Kilmore is the large church which is right by the main road. From the Church head up the lane directly opposite which leads up a quite steep hill for 500m. The The Flora Macdonald Hostel is sign posted and guides visitors down a track on the left. At the end of the track, about 200m, you will see the Hostel. The local bus service also stops at Kilmore. The distances and road network in the north west of Scotland can often mean that travel times can easily be misjudged, Please call us if your arrival time is later than you expected.
