Stoked Backpackers is one of the hostels set up in Muizenberg to cater mostly for the surfer crowd, as this beach suburb of Cape Town is a haven for surfers.
The Location
Muizenberg is around twenty-five kilometers from Cape Town center and easily reached by Metrorail trains in about forty minutes. Stoked Backpackers is right next door to the train station and just a two-minute walk from the beach and five minutes' walk to the Checkers Supermarket and mall.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This big, brightly painted house is (sadly) a little plainly decorated inside. You have a choice of double and twin rooms, most en suite; there's also a ladies-only four-bed dorm, plus five-, seven-, and ten-bed dorms. The dorms are clean but plain, with sturdy bunks and good mattresses. The duvets are fresh and crisp and there are plenty of power outlets in the rooms by the beds. Lockers are provided for those with their own padlocks. The ten-bed dorm is actually two rooms of six and four beds with an interconnecting door. The shared bathroom is in the four-bed room, but has only one shower and toilet.
Common Spaces
For common spaces, there's not too much to speak of. There is no lounge, but the kitchen is big enough for some sofas and tables and there is a TV room, which is actually a wooden platform built above the kitchen accessed by a staircase. This is the area where the free Wi-Fi signal is strongest. The kitchen also has a large balcony overlooking, through the overhead train power lines, the beach (and the railway line, of course). In the backyard, there is a fire pit and a few plastic tables and chairs; at the front of the building, there is a cafe that's open to the public, and this is where you'll find the reception desk. The guests' kitchen has a toaster, kettle, microwave, two fridges, and an electric cooker. There is, however, no free breakfast here, which is standard pretty much everywhere else in Cape Town. Free tea and coffee is provided all day, though.
Summary
Stoked Backpackers offers a lot more than it actually delivers. The brightly painted exterior seems to promise far more than what's on the inside. It's a functional place -- sparkly clean and very friendly -- but we feel it's overpriced considering the lack of even a basic, free breakfast and common areas for socializing. It's handy for the center of town. Access is via either of two gates controlled by a keypad, and there is a deposit for your room key. The beach and bars and cafes and, of course, the train station, so it couldn't be better located. It's an ok place that's pretty standard for a South Africa backpackers' hostel.

Location
• By car from the airport:
• Get out of the airport (Airport Cres, and Airport Approach Road).
• Go on to Settlers Way/N2 heading towards Cape Town (about 10km).
• After Observatory, take the M3 turn off.
• After about 20km, the highway will end, turn left onto Steenberg Road.
• Turn right onto Main Road. After about 3.5km, we're on the left, just before the train station.
• By train:
• Head southbound to Fish Hoek or Simon's Town. Get out at Muizenberg Station. Take the exit towards the mountain/Main Road. Walk out, look right - and there we are.
