Happy Buddha Boutique Hostel Reviews

Happy Buddha Boutique Hostel is located in El Poblado, also called Gringoland, which is Medellín's most famous neighborhood for travelers and expats. It is quite a famous hostel in the area, with a bar/club onsite that brings in many Colombians for some drink.

The Location

It is located right in the heart of El Poblado, in the middle of all the bars and clubs and right next to the main road that goes to the metro station. It takes about fifteen minutes to walk to the metro and about other fifteen minutes to reach the bus station. The airport is very near and it is only a fifteen-minute taxi ride for only a few dollars. Next to the hostel there is a small supermarket as well.

Rooms and Bathrooms

It has different types of rooms -- dormitories and privates. Dorms have bunk beds and lockers inside, but you need a padlock. Plugs for electricity are available for each bed. The rooms are very small and there is not space to leave the bags. Mattresses are on an average quality and air conditioning is not available -- only a fan -- but in Medellín it doesn’t get too hot, so it’s fine. Bathrooms are outside the rooms, next to the kitchen, and there are three with toilets and showers together. Soap and shampoo are available. Everything is well cleaned.

Common Spaces

There is a big bar with a dance floor and a balcony. Also there is an area inside with tables and chairs. There is a kitchen as well available for guests, but the quality is very low, as most of the cooking equipment is old and there is no space to prepare food. The bar outside boasts loud music in the evenings and makes the whole hostel very noisy and it's not really possible to sleep. It is not easy to meet people, as inside there are not many comfortable common areas and the bar is too loud to talk to other people. It doesn't have a party-hostel vibe either, as it is mostly people there sitting and having a drink with a couple of friends. Free breakfast is provided from 8 to 10 every morning and it is quite big and varies a lot.

Summary

All in all, it is not a great place. It's difficult to sleep because of the noise and it's hard to meet other people. Rooms are alright but are very small. The bar could be fun and create a party vibe if the staff would organize some daily events and activities for guests.

Location and Contact

Location

• From International Airport Jose Maria Cordova: Email us for secure airport pickup/drop off (same price as an airport taxi). It will be $70.000 pesos from the Hostel to the Ariport and so from the ariport to Happy Buddha, the rate changes after 10:00 pm to $80.000 pesos. You can also take a bus to the centro and then a taxi that costs $15.000 pesos or about $7 USD. It will take you around 40 minutes to get to the centro.
• From Olaya Herrera Airport or Terminal Sur Bus Station: The best way is to take a taxi that will cost $10.000 PESOS or about $3 USD.
• From Terminal Norte Bus Station: Taxi costs $17.000 PESOS or about $6 USD
• From the Metro get off at 'Estacion El Poblado' and then walk straight up calle 10 (about 15 mins) until you get to Carrera 35 and then take a right. Walk three blocks and we are located on the left right pass the bamboo river. If you don’t want to make the 15 minute uphill hike to the hostel just grab a cab and pay $7.000 pesos or about 2.00 USD and they will drop right at our front door. Just say to the driver 'Buenas, voy para Happy Buddha, treinta cinco con siete porfavor'
