• LOCATION
• Cartagena de Indias The cultural and architectural wealth of Cartagena is manifest in each one of its streets and constructions. The walls that protect the Old City, keep stories of the past that timidly blend with the stories of the modern times, told by the present and overwhelming and infinite cultural expressions of a warm and kind city. During the day, the sun falls over the buildings, monuments, plazas and streets, arousing the colors of the Caribbean, and bringing the sea breeze, to accompany the travelers of the city. At night, Cartagena has its own light, reborn again and with its own life. Life that runs through its streets which have been used by carriages and infinite characters who arrive from all over the world. Cartagena is must-go-to touristic destination for those who wish to rest, get to know and fill their vacation with history, culture, art, entertainment and a wonderful night life. Walled City/Old City In order to protect the treasures of the (Spanish) Crown from pirates attacks, the Wall of Cartagena was constructed. It is about 11 kilometers longs, 12 meters wide and it has 27 strongholds/bastions with garrisons that stored ammunition and sheltered soldiers. Within this extraordinary fortified city, you shall find balconies, plazas, courts, churches, antique large houses, cloisters and streets, flooded/bathed with the splendid Caribbean aroma and the unmatchable kindness/warmth of its people. The majestic architecture offers us an array of different buildings which you must visit, such as: The Palace of Inquisition, site of the Museum of history and archeology; the House of the Marquis of Valdehoyos, the Cathedral of San Pedro Claver, El Bodegón de la Candelaria, the Clock Tower, among others. You will also be able to find different kinds of restaurants, the best stores, arts & crafts, museums and innumerous musicians and dancers that give color and life to each one of its streets. Plaza San Diego Casa Nativa Hostal, is located at Tumbamuertos street, half a block from San Diego Plaza, wich is a place of gathering, of culture and handicrafts. San Diego Neighborhood is one of the prettiest and preserve spot inside the old city walls. Here you will find a wide variety of places to enjoy wonderful cuisine or have a drink with friends who visit us year-round. The antique constructions of the San Diego Convent, today the site of the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes; the Santa Clara Convent, built in the XVII century, today the Sofitel Santa Clara Hotel, are located in the plaza, the perfect point of reference within the Old City. Calle Tumbamuertos Legend says, that in 1876, our city was devastated by an epidemic called the Tablón, the plague took the lives of many people of the city, leaving houses without any survivors. In order to bury the dead, it was mandatory to pass through this street, that due to its conditions, did not allow the funeral rites without, in more than one occasion, these falling to the floor next to the mourning relatives. Since those days, it is known as the street “where the dead tumble”: la calle “donde se tumban los muertos”
