Waipio Hostel Reviews

Description

Gracious, Simple Living in Paradise

The Waip`o Hostel rooms are cute, cozy rooms with a comfortable bed.

Waipi`o Hostel is located in beautiful Kukuihaele just one mile from the majestic Waipio Valley. It is a 60 minute drive from Hilo and a 90 minute drive from Kona.

The hostel is the lower level of a rustic plantation house that was owned and inhabited by my grandparents (Grandpa was a plantation supervisor) for 75 years. I call it rustic because it is a simple wood construction which means it has creaky floors and you can hear through the walls. The lower level is a semi-basement but opens up to a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. Our rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated and clean. You will enjoy the wonderful ocean view and the many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned with non-toxic cleaning products. Our linens and towels are laundered with nontoxic laundry detergent.

Hawaii means insects and other critters - geckos and a few cockroaches, a lot of cocqui frogs. We do our best to keep them under control. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and you don't mind an insect here or there, and love being in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place.

Our rates are $45 per night/ $51.04 including Hawaii accommodation tax.

Location

• Driving Instructions:
• When coming from Hilo: Use this link on Mapquest: http://mapq.st/139iv9t
• When you get into Honoka`a, go through Honokaa town until you come to a four-way stop. At the 4 way stop go straight and go almost 9 miles towards Waipio Valley/ Kukuihaele. At the 8 mile marker there will be a sign on the right that says Kukuihaele. Turn right and take the little road through Kukuihaele, past Neptune's Garden/Last Chance Store/Post Office on the right, past the County Park (open field) on the right. We are the 5th house after the park. It is an old yellow plantation house with a brand new green roof, a mock orange hedge fronting the property, a yellow picket gate tucked in the middle of the hedge with the name Florencio Alegre (my grandfather). Please park on the grass in front of the hedge. The address is 48-5380 Kukuihaele Road. The word HOSTEL is on the mailbox. If you arrive after dark, look for the blue reflector in the middle of the road signifying the fire hydrant in front of the house. There is a flashlight in the newspaper box for you to use.
• The hostel entrance can be found by going through the gate, down the sidewalk to the left of the house to the bottom entrance.
• My home number is (808)775-1533 . My cell is (808)989-1533 .
• When coming from Kona: Use this link on Mapquest: http://mapq.st/Yph8Mn
• Head north, either along the coast, or up Palani Road in Kailua-Kona taking the mountain road (which has more curves). You can stop at a number of beaches if you take the coast road and turn east at Kawaihae heading towards Waimea. Continue through Waimea going towards Hilo.
• When you get into Honoka`a, take a left at the first sign (which also says WAIPIO) and go down a steep hill into town. At the 4 way stop, turn left and go almost 9 miles to Kukuihaele. At the 8 mile marker there will be a sign on the right that says Kukuihaele. Turn right and take the little road through Kukuihaele, past Neptune's Garden/Last Chance Store/Post Office on the right, past the County Park (open field) on the right.
