33 South Boutique Backpackers is one of half a dozen hostels in the Observatory suburb of Cape Town, all within ten minutes' walk of each other.
The Location
Located down a quiet street, just five minutes' walk from the metro train station and Lower Main Road bars, cafes, and restaurants, 33 South Boutique Backpackers is easily reached from the city center by train or minibus in ten minutes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This small place has two double rooms, a four-bed dorm, two six-bed dorms (one for women only), and an eight-bed dorm. All the dorms have large lockers and there is a key deposit. The mattresses are good and the duvets are clean. The dorm rooms are spacious; they're large enough to house an extra bed, as our six-bed dorm did for one night. There are loads of power points, but the front two dorms look out to the front garden, which houses the small bar, and it can be a bit noisy until late. There are three bathrooms to be shared by the dorms, but not really enough showers and toilets in the mornings when people are getting up. Everything is clean, though and there is twenty-four-hour hot water.
Common Spaces
A small bar sits out in the front garden and there is a guests' kitchen with a large dining table down the middle. This is where the rather meager free breakfast is served. The kitchen is well equipped with four-ring gas cooker, kettle, toaster, microwave, and two fridges. With so many dorm beds in the hostel, if it's near full, then there is a queue at the toaster and kettle in the mornings! They could do with an extra of each. In the backyard, there is a sitting area and another indoors, which is basically in the hallway between the reception and the rooms. Here, you'll find three computers, a small flat-screen TV, and a couple of sofas and chairs. There is also an information board and maps here as well as a book exchange. This is the best place to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi. The signal is ok, though it fluctuates frustratingly, and doesn't reach the rooms except the four-bed dorm that backs onto the reception.
Summary
As far as Cape Town backpackers are concerned, this place is ok. It's maybe a little overpriced, considering the small size and the lack of amenities that some of the others offer at the same price, but it's ok. It's kept very clean and it's quite a social hostel with a mix of international tourists, domestic tourists, and students. Tours and trips -- both locally and further afield -- can be organized here.

After you've past the (M57) Liesbeeck parkway, take the MAIN RD off-ramp.At the Traffic lights, turn right, go through 2 sets of Traffic lights, and thereafter (You'll see the Mc Donalds on you right) turn RIGHT into Lower Main Rd. Drive until you see CRYSTAL WIZARDS shop on your right, turn RIGHT into TRILL Rd. No 48 - BRIGHT ORANGE house is 33 South!
