Get to know Cape Otway (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Cape Otway.

Cape Otway is a spectacular area off the Great Ocean Road along the southern coast of Victoria. The Great Ocean Road is one of the most popular drives in Australia and is not to be missed. Along the way, people tend to miss Cape Otway, as it is off the main road; however, this is a huge mistake.

You will find this area of forest to be abundant with koalas hanging out in the trees along the side of the road. There are very few places in Australia where this happens, which makes this area rather special. In some of the Cape Otway hostels down on the cape you can sleep in the same area as the koalas under the trees. Just don't get scared when you hear horrific noises outside in the night. As cute as they are, the noises they make are pretty scary!

While you are here, the Cape Otway Lighthouse is also worth a visit, as it has some nice views off the coast. And of course there is the Great Otway National Park, which has some great walking so you can experience the area, and the koalas chilling out in the park as well.

There isn't much in the way of amenities in the area, so if you want to get some groceries or other supplies you will need to stop off in Apollo Bay or one of the other near by larger towns on the actual Great Ocean Road to pick up these supplies. Also getting to Cape Otway will require a car, as it is off the beaten track along the way. If you are planning on doing the Great Ocean Road for a couple of days though, Cape Otway is a really quiet and serene place to set up for the night and experience some of the Australian bush.
