Get to know Poprad (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Poprad.

Poprad is a very old town of approximately fifty thousand people in northern Slovakia, located in the Prešov region. It is the tenth-largest city in Slovakia, a pretty popular holiday resort, and the starting point of the Tatra Electric Railway, which connects resorts of High Tatras mountain range in the Tatra Mountains.

In Poprad, you can see enormous historical buildings, such as St. Egidio Church -- Roman-Catholic church, which is the most valuable historical monument and it is located in the center of the town; Evangelic Holy Trinity Church from the early nineteenth century; and Spišská Sobota Church -- the Roman-Catholic church of St. George from the mid-twelfth century, which is the oldest building. It has five Gothic altars, because it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the early sixteenth century.

If you just want to relax and enjoy your stay in Poprad, then Aquacity water park is definitely worth visiting. It offers several indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a great view of the Tatra mountains, bars, restaurants, fitness center, saunas, and jacuzzis. It is also suitable for children because of the water slides and playground it has.

If the weather is not appropriate for hiking, you should pay a visit to the Podtatranske Museum, which is one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. Another great place to visit is Tatra Gallery, which offers exhibitions by various artists. You can find this gallery across from the railway station. If you are traveling in autumn, you should not miss the International Festival of Mountain Films.

Expect a rather slim selection as far as the hostels in Poprad go. However, the hostels that do exist in Poprad are pretty decent and not too expensive.
