There are several hostels in Niš and getting a bed should be easy. Although hostels in the center are normally preferable, the city is not very big, and public bus transportation is good and cheap. Location isn't everything here, if you're taking a bus or train into or out of the city you'll find out that the pace of things in the region is slow, and there's no use being in a hurry as life here moves at its own pace, so saving time to maximize your stay is hard to plan. Nonetheless, you should consider the location of your Niš hostel pick, since you may get in later than expected. If arriving by train note that the station is 2km from the center. Some hostels are between the center and the train station, which proves indeed a good balance for travelers.
