Get to know Edinburgh (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Edinburgh.

 On the Royal Mile

Edinburgh is truly one of the greatest cities in Europe, and is often overlooked by those who don't want to spend the time to extend their trip up north to Scotland. Edinburgh serves as a fantastic place to stay, to drink, to explore and as a great launching point into the highlands. Many companies run tours where for less than 50 pounds you can spend the entire day seeing lochs (including Loch Ness), mountains, and valleys.

Edinburgh is a very large city, so be careful to get a hostel close to the downtown core if possible. The city has a great bus system and has been in the works of reinstating their tram system, however as of writing there is no expected date of service. The train station is located in a prime spot right by the Royal Mile, from where you can access the castle, the Queens Scottish residence, Grassmarket or the start of the trail to Arthurs seat. There are a number of Edinburgh backpackers hostels right on Grassmarket (where the nightlife is), but expect lots of noise if you stay there. A more conserved location would be off the Royal Mile, anywhere in the close proximity to the central core.

Edinburgh is known for its rain so make sure you bring a jacket or umbrella. The city has great walking tours and many museums to keep you busy. Try the whiskey and haggis!
