Staying in Sliema is a great decision, as it is close to Valetta but less expensive! Near the waterfront, you could walk along the ocean with magnificent views of Valetta and the harbour area. Once at the waterfront, you have access to an inexpensive water taxi service, that will take you across the harbour to Valetta. Tickets can be bought single or round trip and the it the journey only takes five minutes by water taxi.
Sliema is very nice, with beautiful architecture and winding, climbing narrow streets. The main street near the waterfront has an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and other shops to look through. There are also great restaurants in Sliema with excellent food that is a fusion of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Dining out is also quite affordable; you can also usually count on Sliema hostels to offer access to their kitchen facilities to save money by eating a few meals at the hostel. Overall, this is definitely a great area for dining.
There are many Sliema hostels that all seem to offer great accommodation, with quick access to Valetta and the rest of Malta. It is only a twenty-minute taxi ride from the airport to Sliema, and there are also local city buses that can transport you around the island and to the airport as well.
The people of Sliema are very friendly, will gladly give you advice on what to do and see while visiting Malta. Taking a bus to the Blue Lagoon is highly recommended! You get to go on small boats to explore the coast where there are large ocean caves with crystal clear, turquoise water. This is an amazing area with stunning views and a lot of history and culture.
