La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is a very touristy town set in the middle of the country just two hours north of San Jose. The town is an adventure-lovers paradise. Tour guide offices line the streets and offer such a wide variety of exceptional tours that the question is not, "What would you like to do?" but rather, "What do you not have time to do?". Tours range from hiking Volcano Arenal, horseback riding, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, zip lining, fishing, nighttime animal hikes, volcanic hot springs, spas, and ATV tours. Due to the high competitiveness of the tour agencies, prices are easily negotiated and often come with free meals, t-shirts, or other perks.
The hostels in La Fortuna are as plentiful as tour agencies and are often one in the same. Many La Fortuna hostels have discounted rates on their tours if you stay with them. Kitchens are rare here but the streets are fulled with restaurants that range from typical Costa Rican food to pizza and pasta. The town offers all the amenities you could want, from laundry to banks to artisans and craft markets.
Getting to and from La Fortuna can be tricky and a long process if you are not willing to splurge on expensive shuttles. The local and coach buses are few and far between if not traveling from San Jose and it will, in most cases, take the entire day to reach La Fortuna.
La Fortuna is an excellent place for anyone seeking adventure, wilderness, and world-famous Costa Rican wildlife.
