Get to know San Pedro Sula (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in San Pedro Sula.

To the average backpacker bouncing from town to town, San Pedro Sula would be just another name of a city to explore. Do your research before heading out in the town! This is not by any means a place for travelers! San Pedro Sula has been considered one of the most dangerous cities on earth. Due to the skyrocketing murder rates, this gang-controlled city is not a place to roam around (despite looking beautiful to the naked eye). People must understand and respect that San Pedro Sula is a place where gangs rule higher than governments.

There are a wide range of hotels and hostels costing around 10-20$ per person but once finished your stay, keep moving. San Pedro Sula itself does not offer much to the tourism business. It is almost impossible to bypass this city when traveling through Eastern Honduras, so try to plan your visit during the day, as apposed to arriving at night. The safest areas seem to be the bus shelters and airport. The bus drivers and cabbies understand that wide eyed travelers step into the city ready to explore, but will do their best to educate you and take you to the closest and safest accommodation. Night time here is most dangerous, when the streets seem to be less populated than a ghost town. Locals don't dare to roam the streets after sun down. Do not be fooled by the bright lights and recognizable restaurant chains, especially at night. It is safest for travelers to respect this city and keep moving towards your next destination.
